I finally repotted my Trachy! I think it went pretty smooth, I used a pot atleast triple in size of what it was in. I ended up doing half potting soil (Sta-Green, for vegetables- from Lowes) and half sand (Quickcrete all purpose, also from Lowes). I also mixed in some Perlite although it didn't seem to do anything except float to the top after I watered it.

Even though I used half sand, it STILL didn't drain as quickly as before. Before it drained instantly, right through and to the bottom. Don't get me wrong, it drains fast, but not nearly as fast as before. Before seemed almost a bit too fast, and from looking at it, it did seem to have quite a bit of sand in it. It's been in it's new pot for about a week and seemes to have faired well, hasn't changed, at all. (lol). Anyways, here are some pictures:
Question: Do you guys think it would be bad to change it's location? Aparently my landlord doesn't want the front porch windows open, he's afraid of the rain damaging stuff. But he said I do have use of the yard, and I can put all my stuff on a patio that's on the south side of the building, I'm not sure how much sun it actually gets, the patio is more sheltered from the sun even though it's towards the south, I just don't want to fry it, or give it too little sun.

Nice palm Andy.
Just my eyes probably, but is it planted a little too deep?
Is soil at the same level it was in the old pot?
I've learned that sand can actually hold moisture, stays moist longer.
Did you say QUICKCRETE? as in fast-setting concrete???? 😯 😯
My trachies do best with only some morning sun, but we're hot and dry deserty here.
If it has to be in some sun, make it morning sun.
Looking forward to more pics when you move it (grunt, grunt) 😆

Barb,
I just went out and checked it, it is a LITTLE BIT deeper than before, not even by 1 inch though, there was also alot of small roots coming up through the soil I wanted to cover.
And yes, I was slightly concerned about the Quickcrete too, but when I read the package it said "All-Purpose Sand", and it said "For use in: Plants" so I think it should be good....unless my palm turns into a giant concrete block! 😕
It's actually VERY heavy now, I really had kind of a hard time moving it! I'm gonna need someones help moving it downstairs, I'm on the second floor, and I can't count on the W, she's 8 mo. pregnant, well unless I wanted a new baby NOW 😯
Andy
Andy,
If you're just slightly covering exposed roots, that's fine, but maybe remove half an inch of soil from around the immediate base of palm (2 - 3 inch area around trunk).

Maybe they meant for use in concreteplants 😆 😆 😆 😆 sorry, couldn't resist that one!
Oh yes, that pot will be heavy because of the sand.
Next time you repot in a year or two use only 1/3 the sand you used now, or use more of an rough aggregate soil mix.
With all that sand in there, you'll probably be able to skip every other watering as it won't dry out fast.
Good luck getting it down the stairs... 😕
Maybe you're having a son...he can help you next time 😉

Is that 2 palms or does that have a double trunk? 😕

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

It may not be concrete, but it sure does feel like it! Is it doomed now because of the sand? I know Trachys hate to stay saturated for a long time. What do you use for soil? Do you just mix your own? Or do you mix stuff into regular potting soil?
Good luck getting it down the stairs...

Actually, I am having a son! 😀 We already have 2 kids, my oldest is a boy also (he's 3), and the second is a girl (she turns 2 in late August) and the newest edition is due late June...so if I'm not around come this summer you know why! 🙂
Is that 2 palms or does that have a double trunk?
I think it's just 2 palms planted together, I got it this way. I suppose it could be a double trunked palm? The palm (or other trunk) in the right of the picture is alot smaller and isn't doing as well, so I have that side pointed towards the full sun more.

Thanks Jim

Andy, that trachy looks great! If you get brave, try planting it outdoors. Barb managed to work up the courage after 30-odd years!! 😆 😆

No, it's not doomed because of the sand.
But a heavy watering will likely last a long time unless the pot is sitting in blistering heat.
I've added more drain holes with a drill to pots that drained slowly.
I use purchased soil, it's called an Aggregate Mix, fast draining, has no peat moss, no sand, no treated organic waste.
Not dark colored, and doesn't include organic waste (like treated effluent).
It drains out the bottom of the pot as fast as you pour water in.
That's quite the young family you've got...must keep you busy.
Weird that a nursery would plant two palms together.
It's too upright to be a Nainital with the creeping trunk...hmmmm.
Hope the second one makes it.
