Plans change. This year, my goal was to bring home a tall trunked Trachy from Texas, but my truck died (en route to get a tall PDP, ironically) so that will have to wait. I spent the money of several smaller things that look nice. I planted a largish (15 gallon pot) Butia. It occupies the spot where a Brugmansia was last year, in between the two Sabal mexicana. One of those is alive and growing. The other had spear pull in March and looks to be dying, but there is a green petiole left so I have it in place just in case. I planted a triangle palm nearby, too. It was pulled out of its pot on the patio by the strong winds when the tornado came nearby last week and it asked for a summer in the soil. Obviously it will get dug up in October, but for now it fills the visual space left by the death of the big Sabal palmetto last September. I cut off the leaves of that. There was a little cabbage palm next to the big one which amazingly is putting out a 2nd leaf now. :shock: So small no one but me knows it is there but it makes me happy. Inspired by Jim's Abyssinian thread, I put an Ensete in the spot where where my big Butia used to be. I put a Siam Ruby banana where I once had a Musa basjoo that did not come back this Spring. Sure hope Jim thinks imitation is the sincerest form of flattery....The most drama is from the three bottle palms which I pot planted. They sure look tropical. Wow. I have two little C. humilis cerifera I'm not sure where to plant. Probably near the Sabal "Louisiana." Also a couple of "coontie palms" (Zamia sp.). Not sure where or not to try them in the ground overwinter. Probably not. Other plants are of less interest here, except to Jesse. Another fig, as both of mine made it through winter (well protected); a supposedly hardy Gardenia, etc. --Erik

come on over. We celebrate sunset on the "beach" nightly all summer long.

I'd love to. They sure grow slow from seed, though. Kind of a long-term project. But, I love Sabal minor and managed to buy a decent-sized one today. The story....

When I got a tour of John's fantastic garden last night, we traded tips on where to buy palms locally. He did not know about the road-side palm vendor where I got the Bizzie and cabbage palm last year and the bottle palms this year. And I did not know of a local store ( http://cohlmias.com/) in his neighborhood. I knew of it only as a service that stocks and tends interior plants for businesses, which they are. But they also do retail. W and I went there today. The owner appreciated that we knew about palms and so we chatted for an hour. I came away with a Sabal minor and a Yucca rostrata. Not cheap, but they are decent size and look good. Below are photos:
1 is the needle palm and Sabal minor assortment; 2 is the Trachycarpus assortment; 3 is the owners pride and joy, a Coccothrinax crinita (NOT for sale).

Glad you got your sought-after Sabal minor and a Y.rostrata, Erik.
And you won't have to rely on roadside vendors anymore, as you never know how/where they were grown (shade, etc.).

Tell John we'd love to have him join us ... (more often?)
Then we'd press him for more pics pics pics and details. 🙄

Yes, but this palm vendor I met today is a treasure, too. Skip is his name.
What you and I will like: he cares for bottle palms as part of his job for the past 3 decades and his are trimmed sooooo nicely! I'll have to get his secrets....
