Kris, those palms look fabulous, especially considering what a very hot summer it was in OK.
Q: are the palms in sun all day? or part day shade?
Mine only started looking dark green when I moved it to the east side of house. No sun past noon.
Nice work.

Tim...ah, I think I hear the uncapping of bottles 😀

Barb, thanks. Those guys got full sun till about 4 in the afternoon. There's a big empty overgrown lot with tall catalpas that offer shade in the late afternoon. Full blast til then tho. Lots of watering and drought tolerant palm choices. My potted Mexican fan looks the worst of all, maybe next year will be kinder.

Tim that poncirus is really cool. Quite the hedge.

I can imagine how much water they got to look THAT good!

Whenever I have enough pots, I double pot palms that will spend summer on the patio.
That way the inner pot that holds the palm's roots doesn't overheat because it's in shade of the slightly larger pot.
Roots should be ~20 degrees cooler than summer air temps. Hard to do without planting in the ground.
Maybe that would help your Mexican fan next summer.

Good idea, Barb. I hadn't thought of that trick. I'll do that this coming summer (ah, nice to be thinking about summer protection!)
I did "plant potting" in which I dug holes for potted plants and put the pots in the holes.
All rooted into the soil, but none have seemed to suffer from having those new roots torn when I pulled the pots up in September.

That's a good technique Erik to sink the entire pot into the ground to keep roots cooler in summer.

The S. minor "McCurtain" has survived the winter. I ran out of mulch and leaves, and had forgotten to protect it until the end! I ended up scrounging up some mulch/leaves and protected the palm in the fall, but not as heavily as I would have liked. Several leaves were touching the recycling bag (which was on top of the mulch and leaves), and these fronds ended up getting fried. As I uncovered the palm though, I saw that the lower half of the largest frond was a healthy green colour. I'll post some pics soon!

Hi Cameron,

Nice job with Sabals in NS. They grow SLOW down here in the tropics.....I can only imagine how slow they must be up in your area.

Here is a pic of the "McCurtain" taken today. As you can see, a lot of the outer/smaller fronds died, but I am hopeful about the large frond:

It'll be interesting to keep an eye on this one, Cameron.
Hoping it makes it.

Yeah, I'm hoping that if I am able to give it some good protection over the next couple of winters it won't go into decline. If it's still alive in a couple of years, then I think I will call it a success 😆

Excellent! I just planted another sibling from that palm. They seem tougher than the first 'McCurtain' that I planted...

Here's a blurry (but updated) shot of my original T. fortunei:

Cameron do you keep your seedlings outside during the winter? Just wondering I have never tried overwintering seedlings outdoors I was afraid they wouldn't make it.

Bryce, these seedlings have been planted out since they were just a bit bigger than strap-leaved seedlings. They were sent to me by Paul, who collected the seed from some trees in BC (Victoria?). I put mulch and leaves over them, and cover the whole thing with recycling bags. I planted seven seedlings originally, and the two weakest ones died after being stepped on a few times 😆 This will be their 4th winter in the ground.
