I planted three cheap "blue pot" needle palms from Home Depot in spring 2010. All were covered but not heated. One died; the largest is survived by pups at the base. But this little guy did alright. Pushing up spears. Come on, Barb, you got to like that, right?

Oops, missed Erik's post months ago...sorry.
Yep, you're right Erik...nice needle, good pics. They had a tough winter.

Cameron, not hard to see at all, that Trachy frond is certainly divided.
Congrats, it's always such a long wait.
With your 3 inches rain last week, it should be trunking immediately. 😀

Cameron I`m always amazed that such small seedling Trachy are able to make it through some really tough winters. A little help is all they need. Job well done! Erik after seeing your pics of your needle, Butia c,Sabal L. I am more convinced that ever I will plant a couple larger 24"boxed butias March 2012 that are stagnating and are in need to be potted up or planted. I planted my second to last 5 gal. Needle palm in Aug. this year. S. minor , S.louisianna have done well here. Needle palm last chance here.

These guys both came from Kmart spring 2010. As theyve grown, slight differences have appeared. The first one has shorter petioles, less than 360 deg fans, and the leaflets aren't as prominently bifurcated.

This one has crazy long petioles, nearly 360 deg fans, and deeply bifurcated leaflets.

Both have about 4 spears at any given time. Growth rates are the same. The stubbier guy is a lil more lime green in person.

Next up Sabal birmingham. One of the first cold hardies I bought. Just started pushing palmate leaves this summer. He is going to get planted out next spring. Cameron that trachy will take off with palmate leaves. This sabal pushed more spears this summer than it has in two years - I think due to it really picking up and pushing fan leaves, and sabals aren't really the fast growers like trachys.

Finally a couple needle spears
First ones a big one I got at lowes. Planted this spring before the heat, maybe grown and emerged 2 leaves

This small one came from Walmart. It was planted out earlier than the big one, but lost its spear to heat and transplant shock. I babied it and here it is today. Two spears, not bad.

Erik, thanks!

Barb, thanks! And I can do without the rain 😆

Thanks, John! I am glad that the minimal protection that I provide has seemed to do the trick so far. I think you could do really well with some Butias!

Jim, you did send me Bulgarian seeds before. I had told you that I planted them in direct sunlight, and the seedlings died!! 👿 Kiril had a seed shortage this year, but hopefully I can get some more over the winter.

Kris, those are great shots. The 360* trachy looks especially good!

Cameron.

Cameron,

keep us posted on those Yuzu citrus. I'm curious to see how they fair in your climate.

P. trifoliates are ready to pick.
