Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Wes, You got a good deal, that's a nice looking R.hystrix. You'd pay mega bucks for one that size at Casino. That palm should do well at your place. I really don't think they are as slow as some folks claim. I can see my Needle palm growing. It is opening fronds now. Cheers, Joe

Thanks everyone. I am very happy with it. They are a great little palm and the part I like is it is very hardy and I shouldn't have to protect it.
By the time I paid for air freight it cost me $120.00 in total. It would have been $90.00 if I shipped it ground.
It was $59.99 plus $5.00 packaging then around $60.00 for the air charges.
I paid the extra because I wanted to make sure it came to me in good condition. I got it over night and it was in perfect shape.
It is too bad that local nurseries don't carry sabal minor and r. hystrix. They do well here but instead we get them carrying washingtonia robusta and pheonix canariensis that don't stand a chance here. They have the common, trachies and chamaerops humilis that are hardy but if you do not know palms you could pay for a palm that is really an annual.
I don't even see trachycarous wagnerainus or takil in the nurseries just fortunei.
Even sabal palmetto has a chance here but they are never at the nurseries.
So I guess what I am saying is I am willing to pay to have one shipped air because I can not find them here in Vancouver.
Cheers.

Nurseries are always slow to sell the cool stuff 🙂 They find best sellers and stick with them. 🙄

Well...I think my needle palm may be dead? It was green this spring but has sence turned brown. The spear wont pull, but it does not look good. I can only hope that it sends up new shoots 🙂

Aaron, That is a shame. What temps did you see this winter? How long was it in the ground for?
I am surprised at the damage. They are so hardy, I wonder if something else is going on here?
I would wait before I give up hope. It may resprout during this hot spell.

Wes, it was an unusual winter. Stayed warm for a long time then with out notice it was just below freezing. I think the plants had no time to adapt. The low was -2.6F. but that palm has seen lower temps in the past. It was iin the ground about 4-5 years? I lost alot of plants that have been in the ground for along time. One of the most deadly winter I have seen here.

Aaron are you going to keep growing needle palms even though this one might not make it? Sorry to hear about the other losses as well.
