Of my two windmills that I'm going to try and over winter for the first time would like opinion on what I've done so far with the bigger one of the two(other is seedling).

This is on South side of house, lots of direct sun. What I've done so far is....

6ft of heat tape around root ball (under and around) and a little up on stem/crown. (has own thermostats)

Copper fungicide sprinkled around base and crown

Lots of mulch around base

String of 25 C7 Christmas lights that are secured to PVC by zip ties and tape that totally surround the outside of the palm and over the top plugged into a Thermocube

Bundled up with bungee cords and then wrapped with burlap.

What I have left to do, in maybe another week or so, is add 1inch Styrofoam panels to the outside, and then wrap it all in bubble wrap(I may not put styrofoam in the front that faces the south, or at least not all the way up so it can get some sun)

Add wireless thermometer, and plywood top held down by brick, so I can take it off easy if needed.

One question is that I want to allow for some venting, so was thinking of leaving that small space open at the very top(see pic). I can monitor temps as it gets colder if it is allowing too much heat to escape then I can seal that space up with bubble wrap as well, and add a AC/Heat duct to the plywood top that I can open and close. Eve of the house provides some protection for the top as swell. Do you think the space at the top will be too much?or not enough??

(other plant that you see protected is a Banana)

Thanks in advance for opinions.

I had the same issue with gravel and whether to put mulch on, which is a pain to remove in spring.
H didn't want mulch all over "his" gravel so I removed it again.
PITA, as Jack says.

Your "lots of mulch" around base doesn't look like a lot.
Hardy Jim uses, I think, 5-6 inches deep mulch.

I don't know what your min temps are, but maybe add another string of lights in case 25 aren't enough wattage.
You can always leave 2nd string unplugged, but it'd be a pain to add another string in the middle of winter.

Vent hole, IMO, might be more than you need.
A half inch space...on only one side, will let enough accumulated heat out.
And you can always tape a cardboard "shutter" over the south window to regulate heat accumulation on too warm/sunny days.

I have no experience at all with heat under/around roots, but BILLMA did that with his palms and bananas.
Forgot who else.
Seems to me warm roots/soil would need watering.

Others here will have good advice/options.

Next year you'll need something larger...

Fun projects!

If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.

Had thought of the heat tape as a common sense thing to do, and then read the "Palms won't grow here" book, and he suggested it as well.

I had read another member had done the heat tape, and never watered all winter and basically "cooked" the palm to death, so had planned on using a extra long piece of PVC tube that would end at the base of the plant and then stick out through the side so I could pour some water down to the very base without getting anything else all wet so I could still add water. So much depends on what kind of winter we have.
