The pics are great.

What language? I am guessing Russian or a similar language.

I am surprised that the Sabal minor is only shown to tolerate -20 C.

Allen

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

Those pictures are stolen. I know who took both of the Trachycarpus pictures - they are both growing in NC. The one on the left is the "Greensboro" form.

The Sabal Minor picture is really a Sabal sp. Birmingham growing in NC as well. (I've seen it in person)

turtile, Oh no! I'm so sorry to have provided that link! 😳 I had no idea they were stolen!
So I guess we cannot trust the accuracy either of the Centigrade "lows" these palms survived.

Allen, Sabal minors can stand LOWER than -20 C ??? 😯

So much for my finding interesting links 😳

Some web-sites are full of hype and true growing conditions are embelished. If the claims of some sites where true, there'd be palms growing all over the lower 48 and southern Canada too!

Cheers, Barrie.

Sabal are hardier with more summer heat. So a Sabal in British Columbia, will not be able to tolerate temperatures as low as one growing Kansas (one "McCurtain" was said to survive -24F/-31C in Wichita, although the reading was most likely from a different location) Most people rate Sabal Minor hardy to -11/-24C out in the open without any form of protection.

Like Barry said, true growing conditions are usually never taken into consideration. Its impossible to determine a minimum low due to the wide amount of factors.

turtile, good to know, thanks. Impressive.
Barrie, "...and there'd be palms growing all over..." You're right of course.
Just me wishing it were true.
