These are forecasted lows tonight for selected cities in the Southwestern US. All of these cities have mature palms, mostly Washingtonia Filiferas and Robustas, but some also have less-hardy species. 😯 This should give all of us a little more confidence (source The Weather Channel):

Lancaster, CA 11F
Palmdale, CA 13F
Victorville, CA 14F
Barstow, CA 16F
Saint George, UT 18F
Fresno, CA 20F
Sacramento, CA 22F
Bakersfield, CA 23F

MILWAUKEE, WI 25F

San Bernardino, CA 26F
Las Vegas, NV 27F (High Tomorrow 39F)
Las Angeles, CA 33F

You know what those people have no clue how to predict the weather. Its been in the 40-'s and 50's here for 2 months now. They keep predicting lows in the 20's every three days away. And those 20's have never come to pass. Last week msn said today would be -6 for lows lol. Thats impossible what are they smoking?

The Weather Channel seems to be pretty accurate--it's a pretty big story in those locations. If it's 33F at LAX, it can't be more than 35F-36F at the beach, since LAX is just inland. WOW.

Also, there's someone in the Chicago area who's selling a big Trachy:

Item Title PayPal Bids Price* Shipping
to 53024, USA Time Left
Trachycarpus fortunei - Chinese windmill palm 8ft
**Local pick up only** Chicago
$349.99
Not specified 3h 02m

Two thirds of the continental US is in the grip of a huge cold air mass, encompassing most of the west . Sooner or later that air mass will move eastward. Whether it stays away from the SE or deflects up the eastern seaboard is anyones guess. I think in all likelyhood it will avoid the majority of the SE. Luck has certainly been on their side this season.

Cheers, Barrie.

barrie, wesure have been lucky so far in New England. The lowest temp so far has been 27.f since december. I am in zone six andthats pretty good. You are right though, the cold is moving eastward, and next wednesday should see lows of 10f. No snow yet though.

Below Zero! Yesterday I had -7.1F and today we had -8.3F We will see what effect it has on things. Becuase the way winter was going I thought we would have made it without dipping below the Zero 😡

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Those are some crazy cold temps! Here, our worst cold came suddenly at the end of November, 19.6f (-6.9c) one night.
The latest cold wave hasn't been quite as bad, 23f (-5c) overnight Jan.11 and 26.4f (-3.1c) overnight Jan 12. I know other areas around have had much colder readings. The Fraser Valley and around Bellingham and Whatcom county had temps around 10f - 12f !!!

Cheers, Barrie.

They are calling for a cold night of -20C but before that we are getting 5-10 cm of snow from a winter
storm that effected oklahoma and other states with ice.

I don't like when we get snow and it turns extremly cold on the next sunny day.
I heard El nino is starting to fade soon.

My temps seem much colder than everyone else 🙁
When have palms in zone 5 you got to watch out
and protect.

Nucci60-

The only mature palms in the Milwaukee area are at "The Domes" downtown (enclosed arboretum). I just put in Milwaukee because it's my metro area and I wanted to compare it to the usually warm Southwest.

I hope the temps start coming back up, today was our third day of below 0 F. Feels ok during the day in the sun, but as soon as the sun goes down temps drop off fast. 🙁

I can't wait to see what lives 😀

We're still holding on to our 7b winter (6F low last month)--tonight's low down to only 25F; tomorrow a little chillier to 15F. My covered T. Fortunei at a balmy 54F with the help of a 60w bulb.

For a change, the eastern 1/2 of the Midwest seems to be immune from the coldwaves. The next two weeks are historically the coldest for us. After that it's all downhill!! (I hope I'm not jinxing us!)
