Nice palms. Were these all started from seed? --Erik
Fabulous selection!
You'll need body armor to repot that tree fern!
I really like the look of that Martianus, the wider spacing between leaf segments gives it an even more tropical look.
To find nice palms like that at this time of year amazes me.
Nursery? eBay? Trade?
You've got more holes to dig outdoors... 😀
Congrats on the valuable additions to the herd.

Erik,
I think they were all from seed 😉
The Tesan(seedlings well, first fans on them) I bought last Feb I believe, the T.burma were from last fall
the Takil I did sprout last summer/fall.
The 2 Latisectus and Nanus are off e-bay-earlier in the fall/winter.
Here's a pic of the Tesan when I got them last year 2-11-09

The tree fern is soft no prob-
Matianus is awesome but it seems to have a hard time getting more than a leaf or 2 out when young hopefully outside this year it will get better established.
Matianus is probably the most graceful of the Trachys.
I don't think Martianus or Latisectus has proven to be very cold hardy.I am hearing good things about Princeps though,
it maybe hardy to at least 12(F)!
Martianus,Latisectus and Manipur would need to show faster growth before I would try them in the ground.
I will be planting my Princeps this spring!

I agree it's a beauty.
It'll probably really pick up speed in a couple of years.
I've heard nothing but good about Princeps...love its other name Stone Gate Palm.
We'll watch yours develop, until they're more widely available.

In the mean time you could get some seeds 😀
I wasn't big on that until recently but now I enjoy watching the whole cycle.
I currently have about 8 different Chamaerops varieties(who new)I am sprouting,(+ some other stuff)-some real beauties too-
like C, X volcano,that outta be a beauty!
A Vulcano mutation that keeps the leaves undivided ( like sabal lisa) . the mother palm, this year was pollinated with a male cerifera,
I am also getting some seeds from Kiril Donav of Polar palms, the Bulgarian Trachys!
They are really nice looking palms!

Holy cow, have never heard of most of those.
I only have time for seeds during the winter; summers are really busy, I'd end up having to ignore seed beds.
The Chamaerops x volcano sounded interesting, so found a link (they're out of stock).

At the Polar Palms site, I like the look of the Brazoria palm from Texas:

Cool stuff you're starting Jim.
Time to buy some acreage so you have room! 😆 😆

Now imagine those 2 palms combined-C.volcano x C.cerifera.
They are right next to each other on that site.
Barb-
That is a different Polar Palms, the one I was referring to is out of Bulgaria, not sure if the website is finished until the end of Jan?
Try this link lifted from EPS

Great site, thanks for the link.

I like the look of these palms too-a little more compact then normal* Fortunei and they seem to have
thicker trunks. 😀

When was it warmer?
😳 😈
It has been murky and around 32(F) the last week + or -,5(F)
With fog and low clouds.
Today was different, thunder and 1/3" of ice covering everything!
<img src="http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/weathersticker/big2_cond/language/www/US/IA/Fairfield.gif" alt="Click for Fairfield, Iowa Forecast" border="0" height="60" width="468" />
I thought you folks had warmed up considerably.
Thunder snow... 😆
Getting back to your 6 pictured Tesans, they sure look robust.
Thick stems at such a young age.
You said you bought them last February, are they ALL planted out/protected?
or did you save one for indoors? 😉

Barb
I have 6 bigger ones and a dozen plus smaller ones.
I planted 2 of the bigger ones, there are 4 still inside of which I believe 3 are pictured.
The next set of pics is what they looked like last Feb-
They are amazingly stout, more stout than any other Trachys at a young age, very interesting.
Even my small seedlings are already beefing up and show a marked difference from my other Trachy seedlings.
Thunder ICE!
almost a half inch covering everything-no snow-
and now freezing mist 🙄
<img src="http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/weathersticker/big2_cond/language/www/US/IA/Fairfield.gif" alt="Click for Fairfield, Iowa Forecast" border="0" height="60" width="468" />
6 pictured inside. 😉
Those sturdy trunks look as though they'd keep winter cold far away!
I'll look around for Canadian supplier (sure to get nothing but an echo like last time!).
Definitely want a Tesan.
And a Princeps.
But not prepared to do the seed thing again.
I was really lucky with the Foxtail seeds, 20% germinated in 7 weeks.
The roaring woodstove gets all the credit though.
