Well, after a cold June and July, August has proved to be pretty nice and warm. Thought I would post pics to show how my front yard tropicals are doing. I must say, I am VERY pleased with the growth rate of robustas. What they lack in hardiness, they sure make it up in growth rate. They are a great palm to have in a northern collection. The robusta and trachy were planted last summer. Here are the pictures.

Washingtonia robusta:

Trachycarpus fortunei:

Front of house:

Another washingtonia robusta that I planted this spring and musa orinocos:

Majesty palm and musa orinocos:

I'm going to dig the orinocos up for the winter and bring them in. Should look good next summer. On the sad side, fall is coming which means it will be protection time again 🙁

Very Nice. One of My Washingtonia robusta is about the same size and has put on great growth too. My other larger one was doing great but 4 large leaves turned yellow and dried up. Curious. What zone are you in?

I'm in zone 5b. Just a few miles from the shore of Lake Michigan.. Greatly helps with moderation in winter. Madison, WI will be -25F and I'll be -10F. And that's the worst usually.

Nice looking palms you got there, they look really healthy! Right you are about the robusta's they can put on some great growth in one years time. Next year will really surprise you when the trunk starts to swell and the palm goes from 4 feet to 7 feet in one year. Your orinocos will grow much faster next year, they seem to be slow at first then they go nuts. From what I have heard they are so easy to overwinter in a dark place. Then you can start with what you had in fall, sounds good to me.

Keep us posted!

Bill

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Very nice landscaping. These palms are looking very healthy. Are you bringing that Majesty in for the winter?

Why not bring it in and enjoy it again next year?

wxman, I admire how sturdy and dark green they look.
I must get one of those robustas.
You likely don't get a lot of damaging winds, the fronds look so good.

wxman, Good news for you and your windmill, it's as big as mine was when I planted it in May two summers ago. It's seven feet, I'm sure with your protection methods yours will be the same. It dosen't hurt to try to save the majesty, it will do fine as long as you keep the red spiders off of it.
