I purchased this palm at home depot about a month ago. It had a price tag on it but no name. I think it was the last one left. What kind is it and will it survive the winter here near Charlotte NC? I put it in the area by my pool?

Hi,

I think you have Syagrus romanzoffiana-"Queen Palm" on your hands. If this is true, I think an unprotected zone 7 winter would be tough for this plant. The official book on the hardiness of this palm is around 18 degrees (-7C). Good luck!

Unless you have a very warm winter, it will die. If you want a trunking palm that can survive your winters, try Trachycarpus fortunei and/or Sabal palmetto.

Hey Thanks to you both. I've got Palm fever and bought a Bismarkia Palm today to plant and found out it is not even remotely cold hardy and is not recommended to put in the ground. Can I bring the entire Pot in my house for the winter then set it back out in the spring?

This Bismarckia is 4 years from seed. It does okay overwintering inside, they need a bright spot and kept on the dry side.
