I have a Trachycarpus I put in the ground this time last year. I'm in zone 6a in pennsylvania. The weather is not going to be great here does anyone think its ok to uncover my windmill.
My windmill has been uncovered for a month and a half. It does however, as a 6ish year old plant, have nine inches of trunk. How big is yours?
Welcome to palmsnorth Tony!

My Windmill has about 4 foot trunk. I put it in the ground 3-31-12. I kept it around 30f all winter with one night it got 18 in the huts. Our lows coming up are around the 30f to 20f. Just want to know if its safe to uncover. I got a pindo also but I'm going to leave that hut on for now.
Hi Tony,
Don t worry, i uncovered few Windmill in the past days, and i still have a feet of snow in my yard. By experience, i tried this winter my Trachy at -16c (3-4F). And it has had no problem, so at 20F, no problem at all. And for the Butia(pindo), last year i got one outside without any protection at -10c (10F) and everything was ok. These palms are pretty tough 😀 ..
Ben
Thanks for the info I'm going to take it off tomorrow ill try to post some pics thanks again.
Very good Tony, no need to lose sleep over the temps we will see from now forward.

Hi Tony, welcome aboard.
Look forward to seeing your photos.
If your long range weather shows nothing much below freezing, you're late opening the palm protection 😆 😆

Holy cow, Tony, fabulous job, fabulous palm.
Were you lying down when you posted the pics? :evil4:
Generally lower leaves are cut off as they go brown (until then the palm continues to take nutrition from them).
But we've all cut off lower leaves that were green.
Certainly doesn't harm the palm...and we can get our lawn chair under it sooner.
Palm spikes are better than, say, some of the best selling "general" fertilizers (in a green/yellow bucket). Ahem.
But the best fertilizers for palms are those with 3-1-4 NPK ratio plus minors.
Palms are very fussy and particulary need Manganese.
There's a saying: cheap fertilizers aren't good, and good fertilizers aren't cheap.

I'm always amazed at the lengths you guy's an gals go to to protect your palms Tony's protection is certainly first rate
Barb.... is it magnesium that plants require to stop yellowing.? Even on new growth mine is yellowing at the tips
The camera shots were probably taken with the camera in an upright position and resized to fit the forum space... a problem I too frequently have as well.

magnesium that plants require to stop yellowing.?
Magnesium (mg) always provides a quick green-up, I believe, and many people use epsom salts to provide that (but salts aren't good long-term).
But fertilizers without Manganese (mn) are definitely not palm-specific, and generally lack the other minors that are important.
Yellow tips can also result from too much/too little water.
Here's Florida fertilizer research update.

Kidding about the camera shot 😆 😆
Most photo hosts allow various sizes, as well as flipping to vertical.
Not a big deal, I'll just put my lounger next to computer. 😉
