Bill, I remember you saying in another thread you had built panels for your washies. Can you elaborate on how you built them, or maybe post some pics? Also how big are they and how much did it cost to build them? I'm interested in this panel technique for next year when I go nuts in my front yard with palms.... How do you plan on letting light in to the enclosures?

No problem Wx, I'll take some pictures of them right before I put them up, I don't have any pictures right now. I'll have to look up the slips on the costs. Light just from the tops, there's nothing overhead blocking the sun though. I'll post them in the beginning of the week.

Hey Bill... Did you check out the Washy protection method on the Hardy Palms board from St. Louis?? That will be you next year!!

I saw that this morning Scott. I was going to use the three wall method but I couldn't fit all the leaves in 😀 . One glitch in the power on a cold night and that method just became scary though. Good thing I have a 8000 watt generator if the power ever goes out. That should cover my house and all my palms, maybe my hot tube too 😉

That is what I'm missing: how to protect when the power goes out. Which it often does out here. We even lost power (albeit briefly) Tuesday night, just from the wind--there was no snow or ice.
In December, 2007, we were without power for several days of below freezing weather from an ice storm. We heat the house with wood so no problem there. I cooked with a camp stove on the porch. I just figured I'd heat water on a camp stove to fill water bottles for the palms if it happened this year.

The only thing you can do besides the jugs/5g buckets of water is.....
Prepare your plants ahead of time by keeping them dry starting in Oct and through cold snaps.
Lower water to carbs ratio in palms etc,lowers the freezing,also spraying with freeze-pruf may give you another 5-9(F)
