Hi everyone, I've had this account for a while but never really posted anything. I usually just browse around. 🙂

I live in Zone 5B southeastern Wisconsin, like wxman. I am 13 years old. I currently do not have any palms growing outside in-ground but I hope to either this year or next year. I would like a trachycarpus fortunei to put in my yard. For protection it would have bubble wrap, burlap, leaves or something around it for the winter. If you have any tips, it would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading, and have a nice day. 🙂

Welcome!
Are you also on palmtalk, by any chance?
Wxman, mnpalms and jimhardy all have great ideas on keeping Trachy palms alive through your winters, but they all use some electric I think.
You might want to add needle palms to your list. I think they look cool, and are very tough.
Erik
PS check out the photos my 11 year'old took of palms in Madrid!

It could be doe that way but I think you would have more success using x-mas lights.

Welcome to the forum!
How great is that ... a 13 year old that's already hooked on the hobby.
Excellent!

Another 5B...get ready for big electricity bills this winter as you heat your huts 😆 😆 😆 😆

Jason,
Barb is another big Trachycarpus fan and has one taller than you (and a bit older...) so listen to her.
She, like you, is not keen on needle palms so I'll offer to be their advocate here 😆
Barb hangs out on palm talk sometimes, so say "hi" if you see her there.

Hi Jason...
Hey you could go solar and impress Grandpa with the heat you generate for your palms!

Heck, I'm on PT so infrequently that I can't even remember my name (no kidding!) 😆 😆 😆

As to "listen to her"....it's THE only palm I know how to take care of, so maybe you shouldn't listen.
But the beggar is alive and doing well.
Finally taller than me.
