The weather models have been sniffing out some crazy late season cold for around here starting next week and lasting to early April. Looks like I will have to cover my palms again Monday and leave them covered for maybe two or more weeks!! I have to say this sucks and this is definitely an anomaly. In 2009 I uncovered them early March, 2010 was early March and this year I didn't uncover them to mid-March and NOW looks like that was a mistake.

Hard to find an equilibrium though because being covered in plastic when it is 50F outside could spell death to the palm also from overheating... especially trachys.

Check out this forecast for my city.

Tuesday: A chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Breezy, with a east wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Tuesday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 25. Windy, with a east wind between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Wednesday: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy and windy, with a high near 27.

Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 27.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 9.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 29.

Horrible!!!!

Please keep that cold in your area! highs in the 20's and a low of 9f is unacceptable!

Well I think I'll wait another week to uncover my trachies also. Today was to be the day but it looks like we will get some of this cold here also. It does not look as bad as 9f lows though! Wow, that is a nasty forecast for this time of year. I bet that would set some records. Ours looks like this:

Today (Sunday) Rain 52f/38
Monday Sunny mid 50s/36
Tuesday 45/33 rain
Wed 41/22 flurries possible
Thurs 35/22 flurries possible
Fri 36/23 part sun
Sat 35/22 cloudy
Sun 39/24 flurries possible
And for what it's worth, the long range shows it getting back to the mid 40s and 50s highs, and freezing point or above each night following. Looks like the worst of this will be to the west of where I am. We even had a nice thunderstorm last night in the middle of the night here! Good luck wxman, keep us posted.

Up here we can't count on the freezes being over until may (and even then we can have frosts/freezes). The records in Toronto for March are 26.7C and -26.7C, that's quite a temperature range (fyi the -26.7 and ALL of Toronto's record lows are from the mid 1800s... I'll double check that!)

How much snow is left on the ground?

If you can get rid of that(esp to the north of you),it
should help out 5-10F on the highs and lows.

Well, well... It looks like the updated forecast today now shows we might see upper teens for a couple of those nights. Still showing highs above freezing each day though and a warmup beginning next weekend. Average daily high here is 50f by next weekend. This sucks, I guess we got spoiled last year when everything could be uncovered in early/mid March and we didn't even get another freeze from then on.

Yea the up and down nature of the weather collides with the eagerness to get things going again.

Yea,end of this week into and maybe through next week could get
nasty, lots of energy and cold in place is going to fuel at least one major
snow event(IMO). I hope it misses us but somehow I am not sure we'll be so lucky.

At least this time of year it goes away fast here.

Looks like another pattern change as we head into April,
lets hope this cold spell coming is the last bad one until late
next fall, might as well get it out of the way now!

Good idea covering stuff Tim,I may do the same with a few of
my plants-the Washys are already set up to be protected as
well as the T.ferns but I will probably throw the styrofoam covers over
the palms I just planted to be safe, the Trachys,Needles and Sabals are on their own.

Tim,
I'll try to share. It has been perfect: low of 60, high of 80, day after day. 😀
Even the cold front they're talking about will only give us a low of 42 😯
Canna and banana shoots are popping up--never seen that in March. 8)
