January 2009

July 2010

Notice my new irrigation system.....

Leaf rollers destroy much of my cannas......

Two out of three sabal palmettos doing great. One doing not so good. Any suggestions???

A couple cannas survived including this Bengal Tiger.... I had to cut back most of my Tropicanas, Tropicana Golds, and Pink Sunburst due to significant leaf roller damage...

Replanted Red Abysiaan that hasn't done well at all.. Problem may have been poor drainage in back yard near pool. I'm afraid this may be affecting one of my sabal palmettos as well......

Yippee the Washies came back gangbusters!
I'm so glad...that first picture was awfully depressing.

We have no leafhoppers or leafrollers here at all.
Tons of birds: chickadees, orioles, cedar waxwings, cliff swallows (all are insect eaters) keep our trees plants clean of bugs (even spiders).
No mosquitos either, despite having two ponds.
5 or 6 birdhouses = zero bugs.

Sabal experts will chime in to help you.

If you drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.

I'll 2nd Barb's call to call on birds for insect help. May I suggest chickens?.... 😆
In addition, I water by hand and use that as a chance to look for bugs. I then pick them off or blast them good with water.
Back to palms: very impressive with the Washy.
Sabal: I hope to hear some experts reply as I will over winter Sabal (mexicanum, palmetto) in the ground for the first time this year.
