Yup...they're diaper pails NEW! 😆 😆
Drilled a bunch of drain holes, and presto...deep palm pots.
Washies have such long roots, works great (for now).

Barb,
Great idea!
What do you have for soil in those, uh, potties?

P.S. I don't need to add, but I will anyway: I have a LOT of trouble growing Washy! 😳

Steve, the downside (pardon the pun) is that the $ you save buying diaper pails are quickly used up with the extra bags of soil 😐
I find myself slowing when I pass near a hydro/utility yard, wondering "if those tall concrete things" would make good palm pots.

Nope you don't have to clean it out, Jim, save on fertilizer costs.
But it's a little tough on the drill bit.

Erik you'll grow the best Washies one day, I know it.
By the way, you felt that tall narrow palm pots would topple over in a storm.
The bottom four inches of mine have approx. 20 lbs. of boulders...yup, big rocks...a hurricane wouldn't knock 'em over.

Just don't ask me to move them... 😕 😆

That's a very cleaver idea 😀 I have a insert to a indoor trash can I plan on using to plant a sabal in the spring. That should work out really well for those filiferas, I found a washy root the other day popping through my field stone foundation 6 feet below grade and 7 feet away from the trunk 😯 😯 😯

That insert is a good idea, and you can't get a deep plant pot for the price of a trash can anywhere.
Plus they look better than the "real garbage cans" I've used (and still do for the CIDP).

Washy roots are amazing...they send down what appears to be a tap root (or two or three).

6 feet below grade and 7 feet away from the trunk

Not surprising, especially with the vigor and size of your Washies.

I've seen pics of Washies in deserts where I bet the main root has gone down 50 to 60 feet to find water.
Other palms would just pack up and die before they reached water. 😕
