My local Wal Mart, Lowes, etc always stock some nice sized Sago's & Pygmy Dates in Feb/March.
Two weeks after I brought this nice double home, 30% of the lfronds browned out and the center spears turned to this,

Apparently these are transported during the Winter months in unheated trailers?

That sucks.

The Yucca that I got from Wally World lost about 30% of it's foliage as well.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

I see all kinds of people buying tropical plants and bringing them outside when it is -10C or less! They put their newly purchased plants into their freezing cold cars and expect them to live. I wonder how many returns these stores get from cold damaged plants? hmmm

I imagine that they get quite a few.

In Wally World I had to really bug them to get enough plastic bags to properly cover the yucca. I am guessing that most people would give up more quickly than I.

During the 3/4 of an hour that I stood in the checkout line, my wife went out and started the X Trail so that it was toasty warm for the yucca.

What Wally World did with it before I bought it, I don't know. 🙄

I don't feel so bad now.... I spent 15 minutes in the lobby taping bags together to cover some large Philodendrons.

The Wal Mart by me always has the largest plants brought in the last week of February. Good Luck with your Yucca! My Pygmy date is starting to grow again so it should be OK. Still have it sitting on the dining room table till it can go outside 😆

Steve, hope you're returning it. What a shame that palm is fried.

Take a pic or two with you of your palms (in case they said YOU killed it).
Your pics can prove it was THEIR mistake.

Man, those must be nearly touching the ceiling! Gorgeous form. Nice that they're the same size.

Your 30 year old Trachy looks great! ( I'm sure it will take off for you now that it's in the ground...)

That gives me hope for my containerized stuff, and if you have any tips you want to pass along............. 8)

A week and half ago I bought a large 10" CAT PALM from Wal*mart that really was too big for the pot that it was in because it wouldn't stay up on its own. Nonetheless, at $9.99 I couldn't resist. The issue I have is when I asked the clerk for a plant sleeve to cover the plant because it was very windy and cold outside they had no idea what that was. After waiting 15 minutes they managed to give me a couple of big garbage bags. Well, it looks like the plant didn't take too well to my wrapping job and has now almost completely turned brown. Guess who is going to be receiving a big brown palm back 🙄 ?

Thanks
Phil

Would've been a great buy if it was healthy...it blows me away that store clerks don't have a clue anymore!
Maybe it wasn't the cold/wind...check the others on the shelf when you take yours back.
