Mike, I think they will do fine in our zone. I just dont want to wait for ever for a decent sized one. Hopefully my silver med will start putting on size and I will just replace these marginal palms with minors.
I have a "silver" med that is growing insanely fast..but it looks more white than silver. I have heard "silver" and "cerifera" used interchangeably but the ones I have seen over seas labled "cerifera" are VERY blue with the white powder coating and look fantastic. what type do you have? sad to hear about the hesper, was going to try one myself but I don't think I will now if yours has gone already I know it won't last here with out heat..which Im not up for that right now. Have you tried a Mazari yet? that was my other marginal on the list
Mike, my silver med was a blue pot from Lowes. Been in the ground for 3 yrs now. I had a small Mazari seedling. Just way to small and I think I actually killed it by letting it dry out while potted. It never grew once in the ground and simply fried.
Everything looks great, especially the bulletproof needle palm!

Thanks, the needle is my oldest palm. Its been in the ground for 5 yrs. I transplanted from the front yard to its current location in Oct of that yr and it took very little damage. It has seen temps down to 3F and 8" of snow and has never been protected.
Good to see the healthy Pindo under the tarp, very impressive.
The losses suck, Chad, had expected CIDP to be a tad better at early cold, but the Armata needs a particularly long warm Fall.
When did you fertilize this summer? any chance it was a bit too late?
Sabals and Needle look good.
And the Princeps inside is a beauty.
Thanks for the pics.

Yes, pic please. Did you get it from palmwholesellers on ebay?
I did get this one from palmswholesale. As far as palms go it is healthy and seems to be in very good condition. It was packed well and shipping was really fast..down side is I should have spent the money and got a bigger one..It is more green than blue but hoping the color comes out once it gets older..this big and 5 years old..I think I got awhile
Great looking palm. I have bought a TON from him and have always been happy.
So that is a Blue Needle Palm?

yeah blue needle not looking so blue..hope it colors up and speeds up. even though it is small I knew that going in and it does seem very healthy and I would do business with him again
Hint when doing business with Paul at Palmswholesale....
If you want a larger palm than you see advertised you can look at his link "large landscape palms". Larger varieties of what he sells ..even if they stay small...are listed there. I mistakenly thought it was only palms that grew massive outside, but he has indoor palms there as well that tend to stay smaller, so are almost at specimen size to sell.
or
Ask him if he has anything bigger. That is what I've done. He sometimes has a much larger version of what your looking for and it's not listed on his Ebay store page.
If your ever wanting a really great looking indoor palm that has steady growth? can't go wrong with his Lytocaryum weddellianum Mini Coconut Palm. Very soft fronds, steady grower, very easy inside the house.

Very nice palm. Yes it will turn turn blue with age. He does have a 5 gallon listed on his page for 60 $. But it doesnt look too big to me. More like a 1 gallon palm and for the money! Oh hell, its only money right. 😳
Thanks Barb, I didnt use any fert after Aug. But our first freeze came very early and caught everything of guard. I was gonna test one robusta unprotected against the house but its not working out. Maybe it needs to settle in first.

I don't fert after middle of July for that very reason, but water like crazy until early Sept.
We've had nasty cold early October some years.
This year October was fabulous and mild.
November was a killer as soon as calendar page was turned.
