After 2 very mild winters looks like this one came in fast and well before any palms had stopped growing. Even with covering my marginal palms I already have losses. My CIPD. robusta, and hesper palm are done for. My Trachy Takil is taking a beating but still hanging in there.

This pindo looks perfect with only a frost cloth over it.

Needle palm always looks perfect.

Chammy under the tarp still looking good.<a href=" .html" target="_blank"><img src="

Notice the ferns are not defoliated. This side of the house I would rate a zone 8, a very nice microclimate.

Even though this is the same side of the house this robusta is barely hanging on.

Trachy princeps is under the box. Take my word it still looks good.lol

This 3 yr old sabal Birmingham seedling no longer gets protection.

Sabal Brazoria and smaller Birmingham that no longer gets any protection or supplemental water during summer.

My largest Princeps which may get planted if the small one holds on. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for looking,

So you lost a Blue Hesper Palm? was it in the ground? and how cold did it get there?
Did the Hesper turn brown?(asking for a reason)

We hit 18F way back in Nov. It had been declining ever since. First it lost its spear. Today I noticed the rest of the fronds where dried and brown. I am not giving up on it though. I did pot it, trunk cut it and treat it with copper.
I was asking because like you we in Omaha got surprised by a sudden cold snap. We were going out of town but when I checked predicted lows forecast said low 20's so left potted Mexican Fan Palms (5) CIDP's (30) European Fan Palms(2) and 1 Blue Hesper Palm all outside. It got to 9F one night
Mexican's all torched brown fronds etc, but no spear pull...so far.
European Fan Palms...untouched.
CIDP's....Fronds slowly turned color, but not brown...more like dull green. No spear pull so far.
Blue Hesper..looks untouched but don't know how it doesn't show damage. Wasn't sitting next to house either, more out in the open so we'll see.
All are in garage now for the winter that I can heat if need be. It's been a tough winter as far as cold this year. Typically December isn't too bad around here. If they all make it, I hope it "toughens them up"
Pissed that I trusted the forecast like I did. Could have put them all in garage.

I guess mine are not as hardy, my robusta against the house should not be showing any damage. The Hesper was a small one gallon palm from ebay. About 4" of trunk, my bad for planting it so small. I have a pindo that got trunk cut last spring, it should be ready to fill in a spot along with the other princep.
Yea, maybe that is the difference. My Blue Hesper was a 5 gallon I got from Jungle Music and in a 20+ gallon tub. May have helped.

That definitely helped. Their 5 gallon palms are very good sizes. I would order more from them but they require me to buy a phyto cert. Plus shipping is more than the palm cost.
Nice plants 🙂

Butia looks perfect. Maybe is too wet Autumn and Winter with cold snaps for your Brahea armata. I cover my Brahea armata and Butia odorata against rain since mid October to prevent rotting spears. Thanks for sharing pictures.

Thanks guys
I'm not sure how picky Hespers are about being wet. I know I have had problems in the past when my Butias were smaller. It was on a nice hill and the first palm to get covered.
Qestion were are you buying the Burminghams Palmettos? Besides Chilly Palms.
Nobody panics when people plant normal trees because its part of the plan... if someone plants a Palm EVERYONE LOSES THERE MINDS!

Trithrinax is a very hardy palm...I had one hang on for a few years as a small plant...
just to much accumulated damage at to small/to slow a growth rate, they need to be
dry top to bottom though.
Princeps is a beauty, glad you are protecting the other one!

IPN, I bought all 3 from different places. Chilly palms, yuccado and Plants Delight. Plan on stopping by and seeing Gary in Feb. but now I believe I really want 2, 7 gallon Brazorias instead of more Birminghams.
Jim been looking at those on ebay but they seem to grow as slow as a needles. And the larger 5 gallon ones look more like a 2 gallon palm with a 15 gallon price.

I just got a small one for the same reason. Price vs. size is not a good look. Phil out at Jungle music offered me a good deal on a 5g large one but shipping was murder. I went with the smaller and I'll see if it makes it. we are in a much warmer zone compared to most of the board so we might have better luck with them. Won't speed em up any but they might survive a bit better.
Mike, I think they will do fine in our zone. I just dont want to wait for ever for a decent sized one. Hopefully my silver med will start putting on size and I will just replace these marginal palms with minors.
