I just bought a bunch of cattail palms hopeing they would suit my summer climate better than the majestys I have had. Does anyone here have any experiance growing these outdoors ? Im in winnipeg, so summers though short, can be warm. I had majestys last summer that did ok, but didnt survive the winter.
These look best when grown in partial shade.... Will be a darker green color & growth is faster.
Have one in the GH, frozen solid the first winter and resprouted, fairly tough palms 8)

Unless you bring your palms inside during the winter or build a heated greenhouse around them they will not survive outside in Winnipeg. There is only two species of chamaedora that will survive here in Vancouver and that is radicalis and microspadix.

Hello, all my palms end up in the house over the winter. I doubt there is any palm that would survive extender periods of -30c. Last fall I started an open loft area with skylights in the house that seems to have helped the plants maintain over the winter. The most recent cattails are now in a heated greenhouse and are doing well. Everthing else is still indoors... its still pretty cool here.
You had both micrpspadix and radicalis die on you?
Funny they both survived this winter at my place. They did have about 25% frond damage but they will live.
Yet you have butia, washingtonia, phoenix, chamaerops that you hardly protect survive.
I guess with the extra rain and cloud cover I get here chamaedorea species like it better here and palms that like drier weather like it there.
