My butia has been starting to brown lately, and I figured it was because it was root bound. However, when I got it out of the pot it wasn't all that bad, and all these worms and bugs fell out of the root ball?

I've never seen this before...the bugs almost looked like termites except I don't believe they were. Didn't get a shot of them, my cameras dead. I don't know how to explain how they looked except they sort of looked like termites just without the wings...It looked like they had a nest in there and I think there eating my Butia alive!

Are these normal and what can be done about them? I have that "Bayer Advanced" liquid...Directions ARE NOT clear for potted plants, I pretty much fried my Majesty (which still isn't dead but dies down every few months)

Thanks
Andy

IF the plant was from florida (most likely), then you picked up some sortve grub/pest. Ive only had this happen once. The plant didnt make it at all. The only thing I can suggest is making a mild soap solution (one or 2 drops to a large jug), and pour it into the soil, then take another of cool clean water, to flush the phosphates out. Not sure if this will work.

You could also try taking it out, and rinish off the entire root mass, and repotting it in a new pot, with new soil.

Other then that, all I can say is good luck :S

Agree with Jesse, wash all the soil off and put into new soil.
Treat the new soil too for egg/larvae around the roots that you may have missed.

Since it's declining, I'd use a mild insecticide drench (versus just soap...sorry Jesse).

Could carpenter ants do this kind of damage?

Keep us informed and maybe some pics.
