I sent off to a guy for free seeds of Filifera and Dasy Wheeleri.
I think he sent me dudes!!!!
Lemme know if these really are Fililera & Wheeleri
The Flilifera are REALLY small. Look like bird seed. Also, they float. NONE sink. Also, they smell like fresh cut hay. If you don't know what that smells like, kinda a wintergreen smell.
The Wheeleri look like oatmeal flakes. They have three sides and when I split one apart, it was powdery.
Lemme know if I even need to waste my seeds starter mix on these.
Kansas I can tell you the Washingtonia filifera seeds are about the size of a bb like from a gun. They are light brownish in color. The D. wheeleri seeds look like you described are the real deal. I would go ahead and germinate and plant. Here is a site for germinating seeds and where the roots come out. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.ison2/page9.html

Great site. I do wonder, I got some cactus soil, should I germinate the Wheeleri in regular peat, or in the cactus soil?
Kansas I would use cactus soil check your soil before planting to see if it drains freely.Just run some water through it does it sit on top for more than 20 seconds or does it quickly drain out the bottom. Desert palms and Yuccas don`t like wet feet so keep adding perlite and course sand until you get the consistancy they will like. You might want to add some pebbles to the bottom of your container before you add any soil.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Hi Okanagan. That sounds like great advice.I take it the same applies to plants in containers and those in the ground.
Looks like I'll have to repot some cycads.
Cheers:Ian Mc
Hi Ian . I find the more preparation before I plant anything just makes things better and easier to deal with in the future. I just lost a smaller Cycad because the nursery where it came from transplanted it into the wrong soil 😡
