only thing with sweetbay magnolia is that they are semi evergreen. Here in 7a they are basically deciduous. If it were a sweetbay in zone 5b, I recon it would be absolutely leafless by February.

then again those here could just be in neglect. I agree what you have in both sets of pictures is indeed Magnolia virginiana. You can see the branch ends where the fruit has fallen off.
Nice examples and it is great to see they can do so well in zones colder than 7a.

That unknown Mag is not an Edith Bogue.......not southern magnolia. Not sure ID, I think Mike T. is close. I posted the photo on a German plant board. There's an Magnolia expert on that board. He came to my garden last May and was here in the USA to attend the Magnolia convention in Boston/Providence. I'll let you know what he thinks.

Magnolia ID, see below from a German plant board.

Hi Tim ,
it is defenitely a northern Magnolia virginiana .
You can definitely see the stipule scar which covers about 80% of the petiole.
= Magnolia virginiana
Best wishes ,
take care

Thanks Tim for looking into the ID.

Does Jost know it's growing in Zone 5b/6a?

"Magnolia virginiana is a deciduous or evergreen tree to 30 m tall, native to the southeastern United States. Whether it is deciduous or evergreen depends on climate; it is evergreen in areas with milder winters in the south of its range, and is semi-evergreen or deciduous further north."

from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnolia_virginiana

Hi Barb,

yes, I mentioned that it's growing in zone 6a British Columbia, Canada.

Here's a link from University of Connecticut regarding M. virginiana. They claim hardy to zone 5 even though it's native much further south than Connecticut.

I should've taken a photo of leaf undersides, too.

Strange that it's not deciduous here, like my Star Magnolia.
Great link you provided Tim.

Perhaps the Mag in your area is some form of hybrid with M. virginiana?? Keep us posted if it turns out to be something other than M. virginiana.
