Re Abyssinian...do you rely solely on rainfall for watering?
You did say it barely rained at all but I thought you supplemented with hand watering/sprinkler?
That cactus bed's plants are maturing so nicely, look at that agave!

Just about 3 years now on the Washys Antti,
I do dig up the others you mentioned including the Cactus .

I leave that one(Cereus Peruvianus)in the ground until about the low 20s.
It grows about a foot per year.
