Went to this house in Junction City today to talk Palms with this lady and she just up-n-gave me 8-9 seeds from her Bamboo. I know bamboo does'nt seed or flower very often but she made it sound as if this bamboo seeded every year.
The seeds are dark black with a bright red spot where they were on the bamboo. The bamboo itself was brown and about an inch & half thick.
It could be a Phyllostachys aureosulcata. Some of the varieties's canes turn orange/red/maroon in full sun. The canes are usually about the same diameter at maturity. They grow about 15'+ and are mostly rated Zone 7.
P. nigra is supposed to have black canes. The pictures that I have seen show more of a dark brown with lighter colored splotches.
A P. nuda variety is rated Zone 4 but is supposed to grow only to about 8' in Zone 4.
