Barb, I plan on planting the 2 agaves next year after I see how this parryi does this winter. I think I'm gonna wait on the faxoniana. It doesn't sound like it stands a chance in Central IL. I might just enjoy it in a pot at least until I move somewhere more accomodating.

Have you had luck with hesperaloe where you live? I was gonna try to go without protecting it. This is the first year I've had it.

Everything looks awesome-what did your Hesperaloe do to end up in jail? 🙂

Haha! Hi Jim! I know you from gardenweb!
I surrounded the hesperaloe with wire because I heard that animal like to eat them. If it survives long enough to get bigger I will eventually remove the cage. I do have a brakelights hesperaloe in my front yard and nothing has ever eaten it, so it may not need it.

Better safe than sorry...I hear ya.

Should bloom next year-mine did this year and the patch
on the west side is going to bloom too-I should say it is sending
up a nice bloom-stalk.

You can see the 2 bloom-stalks -in front of and-above the Y.Gloriosa.

Hi Bryce. I love Southern Illinois. I came back that way from Florida about a month ago. I actually got the yucca Gloriosa from Carbondale. I was really surprised to see it and I had no idea what it was. I've never been to Jonesboro but I work for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and I noticed that there is a Looking for Lincoln site in Jonesboro. I think Metropolis is awesome too! I would live anywhere in So. IL.

Cuja nice, I have a few Gloriosas, and a few other kinds of Yucca. Pretty much every garden center down here sells Variegated Gloriosa now and "Color Guard". Yeah Abraham Lincoln is big in Jonesboro it was one of the towns that the Lincoln Douglas Debates were held a few years ago they had a huge reenactment with people dressed up like they did in the 1800's and carriages, horses, and an Abraham Lincoln impersonator, lol. There is even an Abraham Lincoln Statue in the Jonesboro park. I have been to Metropolis a few times, nice town gotta love the riverboat casino too, and superman, lol.

Jim, what is the columnar cactus that has at least five columns together in the lower right behind the agave, looks about 1 foot tall. Is that an echinocereus trigloc? Also, do you cover your ice plants?

You got it right.

The ice plants are partially covered by the edge of the protection
and in some cases smashed by it-always comes back and I spread it
around where it ain't.
