Along with the usual gardening area, I also have 1.5 acres of woodland that I am slowly trying to reclaim from the terrible weed European Buckthorn (Rhamnus). I have cleared a few areas and have begun planting native pines and spruce. there are a few native shagbark Hickories, some Linden (Basswood), quite a few Ash (which will need to come out thanks to the ash borer), and, finally, a number of very large American Elm which are slowly being killed by Dutch Elm disease. Lots of work for sure. Eventually I'd like to naturalize a number of Magnolia, Rhodies, and other BLEs in the area. But this is still a few years away!

Some pics of what it looks like today, if you have suggestions for plants which would be solid in a woodland, please pass them along!

It sure is a nice property Paul.

How about an Oak or two, since oaks do so well back east.
Smaller Pin Oak if you're concerned about eventual size.

Or Quercus Rubra if you aren't.

By the time you retire...you young fry!...they'd provide great shade. 😀

I agree with Barb you should plant a few oaks they are a very important source of food for many animal species and mature trees provide lots of nesting places for birds and squirrels.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
