I need some advice please. SInce Hurricane Sandy will most likely directly impact us, do you guys and gals think I should cut my (10 to 15 ft) musas back now before the storm or let them ride it out?????? I will probably have to cut hem back to overwinter anyway in a few weeks???????? I'm torn! 🙁

Know how much you love your musas.

We've never had a hurricane but have very strong winds in summer.
They destroyed my potted musa, totally shredded, so I gave it to John whose area doesn't get high winds.

If a hurricane could rip them out of the ground, I'd cut the leaves off to save the stem and roots.

One weather website said that Cape May NJ is in the path of this storm...isn't that where you spend summer weekends?
Fingers crossed for you guys...and your musas.

Yep Cape May is our place, but thank God we wold the house this past spring! Feel bad for the new owners.....We are looking for a new shore place slowly now...... I just may cut them back. I figure, I'll wait and see...if it gets really bad by Monday am as they say it will do, It won't take me much time to hack through them with a machete, Oh the carnage! I'll document their loss in all its horror of course

thank God we sold the house this past spring!

Maybe you're psychic 😆

A new shore house might be inland next week... 😐
Bad joke, sorry.

I'd cut 1/2 and let 1/2 remain. It's a nice test to see which worked best.

PS, good luck with all the wind and rain.

Its going to be a mess from what ive read up on it so far. 20 foot waves of of long island, the center hitting somewhere around new jersey (thats actually good news for the hurricane part). Tropical storm force winds fom cape hatteras to boston. IT looks like hurricane force winds for NYC to Delaware on monday, from what they say today. BEnd down any bamboo, at least. In regards to the Musa, if you cut or it breaks does it make a difference besides the clean cut? I like Tims advice.

The real problem is going to be water. I think Jersey is in the potential to get 10 plus inches of water in certain areas, and it seems like its going to merge with that arctic low , nor easter like storm, and sit. There is a blocking pattern setting up in the upper atlantic, its going to sit and slowly leak into southern Ontario (again, according to data today) There is even the talk of snow, measured in feet up in the mountains.

Ill post the link to this, so you can see how long its going to sit on the east coast:

I think I may be worried about any desert plants. Also, if you have any plants that are really special to you or general, that are underneath large trees, id toss something on them, again, talk of wet snow, not to mention long term winds, I wouldnt be surprised to see downed trees and limbs. Might want to think of protecting some things liek that, tied down securely of course.

You should get some food, water, beer etc. Lots of talk of power outages as well. (I know its a given, I feel better saying it though :D)

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
