Anyone growing any hardy kiwi? I picked up a kiwi plant last month and i was told it was hardy to -29C. Can't remember the type of kiwi it is. 😕

Here's a pic

I tried growing kiwi from seed without success. They now sell kiwi vines at all of the nursuries and I am planning to buy a couple of vines to grow against my garage wall.

The ones that they sell here are supposed to be Zone 4 hardy -34C.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

I don't know how hardy my kiwi is but the species I grow is "Hayward".
I had over 600 kiwis on it last year. They ripen on the vine in the first week of December.
I need a female and male vine. The fruit is just like the ones in the grocery stores only sweeter and juicer. I make kiwi jam with some of them.

That is definately not the same variety as what they sell out here. By the end of October the plant would be dormant for winter and from what I understand I would be lucky to get more than 100 kiwis. The fruit is supposed to be smaller, about an inch to 1 1/2" with a non-fuzzy skin that you don't have to peel.

You are telling me 600+ kiwis is alot. It filled up my spare fridge. No room for beer!
"Hayward" has a fuzzy skin as does the vine. Very tasty fruit though.

We have some growing at my father's place in Toronto. There about 5 vines growing well unfortnately they have never fruited. Lots of promise in late spring but all berries drop. Hopefully we will have some this year. Oh well at least we have room for beer. 😀

Thanks
Phil

How old are the vines? Let me know if you get any kiwis off it this year.

My kiwis are in full bloom now.
I have attached a pic of them. It looks like another bumper crop. Who knows maybe there will be over 700 this year.
