This plant got really beat up from winds this year.
I just cut off three shredded leaves.

Should I cut pups off?

Thanks.

I think it's a catch 22 Barb. Has the plant been in ground and just now went to the pot?

Never been in the ground.
One+ years old.
Spent last winter in the cold building (just above freezing 40 to 45 F).
Did fine until the windstorms hit this summer.

Why would pups grow?
Is it a sign the parent plant is sick?

Barb....Wait till the pups get a little bigger before seperating. You want to make sure when seperating that the pup has some good roots. You will want to cut the corm so that the pup has some of the roots or it won't survive.

A banana sending up pups is a natural occurence and is natures way of making sure the plant carry's on for the next generation. Once a banana fruits it 's life cycle is complete.

I don't want more than one banana tree, so was planning on cutting them off and throwing away.
Wondered if pups were a sign the parent plant is declining.

Kinda doubt this almost 2 year old musa basjoo is anywhere close to fruiting.

Thanks.

Barb I`ll take those musa basjoo banana suckers off your hand next spring? Every one of my bananas has suckers so I`ll never have to buy another banana plant again LOL. I can`t see those suckers being a bad thing and to just leave them alone until you transplant your banana into a bigger pot.

OK, they're yours, John.

So I leave them on until spring? or do you want me to cut them off (carefully) soon and pot them up?

The reason I don't want them is because I want a banana tree, not a bush.

Barb they are not big enough to survive being taken from the mother Banana right now. They would need to be at least 8 to 12 inches tall. I would wait until spring. Here is a site on how to divide banana pups. If you didn`t already know.

Thanks for the link, will leave the pups on until spring.

BTW, sorry Bill, it WAS in the ground last summer.
Forgot I had done that.
