I have no idea how I'm going to protect this.

Last year I had a smaller edith bogue inside and it died. This year I put it directly in the ground

YA, if we keep this thread up Soctty can chime in. He's done some excellent things with So. Mags in Kingston.

I planted a small BBB last year and protected with with frost cloth and mini-lights. The foliage came through OK (anywhere that there were no lights was damaged) and a small branch did die, but I think I damaged it while putting on the initial protection in place. FYI the low at my place was -31C, with weeks below freezing.

Here is the Magnolia in early April of this year:
