I was out and around with camera in hand here on Vancouver Island through the city of Nanaimo today (Dec.20 -09) and took these pics. We where 7.8°C (46°F) today with rain settling in the afternoon hours.

Those are fabulous trachies down there, some quite old.
I like the twisted stems on the yuccas.

Those are great. The only time I was in Nanaimo was in 1993 and that was just an overnight stop at the marina on my way north. Thus, I didn't have time to walk the streets and see those palms. I had no idea what I was missing at 49 oN latitude!

I should have waited until today as it's much brighter outside and better for photos.
Barb ... it's not unusual to see curved or leaning trunks on Y. recurvifolia.
The downtown marina is still there and is larger and has been updated as well.
They need a few palms down on the waterfront. Once the large cruise ship terminal is built, it will showcase our area.

I was travelling on a small sailboat from Oregon to Alaska at the time, not a cruise ship. Still, palm trees near the marina would be a delight to cruise ship passengers!
How far north on the island do people grow palms? All the way to Port Hardy?
Any up in Prince Rupert?
(When I was last in B.C., in '93, I thought palms were just a Victoria thing.)

I know of a few gardens up island that have palms in Comox and Courtenay. Chances are there would be some in Campbell River and maybe in Port Hardy. I haven't been up that way since 1974. Heading west there are palms in Port Alberni and certainly in Tofino on the west coast of the Island. Victoria has had a long standing tradition with gardening and as such, does have quite a number of palms and not just in private gardens. Public plantings are quite common as city planners really embraced the idea back in the '90's.

The "Ethnobiology" conference is in Victoria in May and I really hoped to go. I have not been since '93 and my wife has never been. Alas, I can't afford it. As you can tell, I have fond memories of the area.

Interesting ... I would have never guessed anyone (aside from locals) would have "fond memories of the area."
I assume most folks that visit here come and go almost like they do in Disneyland.
Next time I'm in Victoria I'll grab a few pics and post 'em here.
