                        <content:encoded><![CDATA[So far this winter in Riga temps were down as low as -23 Celsius (-9.4 F).<br>For the last 3 weeks Riga hasn't seen a  day with temperatures above freezing.<br>Mostly it stays around -5 up to -10 during the day and drops to -10 or -15C during the night.<br>A proper winter.<br><br>First Eucalyptus gunnii. I planted 4 plants. 2 in my garden, the other two in various places in Riga.<br>So far one of them without any protection is doing well.                         <content:encoded><![CDATA[This is Latvian University Botanical Garden in Riga - Zone 5b/6a.<br><br>It's important to note that Riga is officially listed in Zone 6a.<br>However over the years I've woken up in the morning to -26 Celsius (=15 Fahrenheit)<br>too many times. <br><br>Also, winters are super long and dark, because Riga is much much further up north than Quebec city in Canada.<br>Riga is located at a latitude 56°.<br><br>So I'm always overwhelmed to see some broad leaf evergreens in Riga.<br><br>LU Botanical Garden in Riga has some green islands. <br>Planted 20-30 or more years back.<br>Here is the main green oasis in a panorama view. Viburnum which has become a small tree<br><a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/759/23168731844_8e828ede1f_h.jpg"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/759/23168731844_8e828ede1f_h.jpg"></a><br><br><br>2. Euonymous - has reached the sky<br><a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/679/23714331761_f77401d7df_b.jpg"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/679/23714331761_f77401d7df_b.jpg"></a><br><br><br>Then there are 2 Pieris's<br>The oldest one is rally struggling.<br><a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5758/23168731924_33d6ce761e_b.jpg"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5758/23168731924_33d6ce761e_b.jpg"></a><br><br>The youngster seems fine.<br><a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5629/23714331911_1fba5d3a56_b.jpg"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5629/23714331911_1fba5d3a56_b.jpg"></a><br><br><br>Another great plant is Leucoteya.<br>It must have been there for a very long time, because it has become so wide.<br><a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/719/23714331961_8bd02de5f1_b.jpg"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/719/23714331961_8bd02de5f1_b.jpg"></a><br><br><br>Then I found Cherry Laurel about 1m-1.2m high.<br>A really good size for Zone 5.<br><a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5748/23714331721_47a6173913_b.jpg"><img src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5748/23714331721_47a6173913_b.jpg"></a><br><br><br>Then there were 2 shrubs I couldn't recognize.<br><a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/660/23168732114_0be0334301_b.jpg"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/660/23168732114_0be0334301_b.jpg"></a><br><a href="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/734/23168732064_db608a7027_b.jpg"><img src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/734/23168732064_db608a7027_b.jpg"></a><br><br><br>And the last two will be ground covers.<br>Really nice ones. But after that it has grown and grown. In warmer gardens they can become a pest.
