Spring Kill off

The 2 yucca and my existing cacti survived the winter but it is still to early to tell if they will survive the spring. The only thing left alive in the yucca is the spear and all of the cacti have turned greyish purple.

What I think happened was as the snow melted off from the sun's heat in sub-zero temps, it flowed slowly and refroze. My desert ends with a sidewalk which was frozen from the surface down. With all of the moisture and snow cover combined with several -15 C or colder nights and the cold snap, the sidewalk edge froze solid including the gravel under the walk. Then the water backed up and froze repeatedly until a lot of the desert was water logged during the day and surface frozen at night.

I may have to rebuild the desert, raising it and adding underground "drainage ponds'.

Time will tell. I have had no drainage problems in the past.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

I think they will come out of it if you let them be. Sounds normal for the plants in my yard. 😀

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

They should be ok. I had two different cacti that were moldy from the winter and now have bounced back and started to grow. 🙂

Jay

I hope all will be well with your plants, Allen.
Give them a bit of time in warm weather (if it ever arrives).

It is smile time. Everything came back. The vandalized pad of my O. basilaris basilaris has sprouted 3 new pads and both yuccas have recovered and sent up several leaves. The only concern is my O. fragilis which is showing little growth and still has a purplish hue. The 2 cholla cuttings that I got from Paul in Ontario seem to be taking root. They are not showing any growth as yet but I don't expect anything until late summer.

That's cool. I had a feeling they would recover for you. 😀
