Just thougt I would post a helpfull tid bit I learned and hope that this will help someone in the future that does a search on this site for this problem.
Bought this Trechy a year and a half ago. It did awsome outside in my Zone 5 all summer. Put on a full foot + of trunk. When Kept outside, watered along with yard every day in the heat of Summer, and never lost a leaf in the 7 months I had it outside (April to November).
But when I brought it in, it quickly began to yellow, then brown every existing leaf at a rate of 2-4 a day. I would have to cut about 12-15 leaves a week off. However, it would still put out new leaves at a rate of 1 a week for about a month. HOWEVER!!!! after one month I noticed that the new emerging leaf was only about a third of the size of the others. This has gone on for about 10-12 leaves. When you notice this, do not be alarmed, it is just showing signs of site trauma.
It will continue to be healthy, just putting out smaller leaves. Everything is fine. Some of those leaves will still be on the tree when you re plant it outside in March/April.
Here is a pic of the tree. This is the day I bought it. Now, from the point of the leaves growing, it has added a foot + of trunk. One of my "Pride-n-Joy" trees.
Actually Barrie, YOUR post might be more helpfull to me. I am thinking of leaving it out next Winter and your info on snow is very interesting.
Keep in mind Barrie's lowest temp was only -6.9C I believe.
Barrie how hardy is this yucca?
Wes North Vancouver Zone 8b/9a
Keats Island BC Zone 8a
Palm Springs CA Zone 9b/10a
Wes ... I can't recall the range of hardiness for this Yucca. It seems to me that I found it to be suitable for outdoor cultivation here so I went ahead and planted it. I'm not sure leaving it buried in snow for 5 days was the best thing for it.
Kansas ... Snow will act as an insulator to a certain degree. Once it gets taller snow won't be as effective.
Cheers, Barrie.
So your saying that due to mine being so tall, the snow would not help it as the trunk would be exposes too much to the cold air? I understand now.
Yea, with this tree as one of my pride-n-joy, I would hate to kill it now. I'll keep it in the greenhouse.
WOW!!! they really look healthy and happy. You have a TERRIFIC job on those.
