And...don't forget my big yucca rostrata died last winter outdoors with no heat...so better follow your own gut-feeling. 😐
Barb
Your right Barb, but I don't think any yuccas here need heat in the winter. Of cource a little cover goes a long way. 😉 This is the first year my larger rostratas look better than my larger j-trees, so no need to cover the rostratas yet. 😀

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

that's strange how your Yuccas in snow look so bad compared to the ones not in snow. Yucca gloriosa seems to get white leaves when in contact with snow but the other species don't seem that bad. Keep us posted.
It is strange and I cant say that it is good science, but I have lost one large j-tree after it was buried in a snow drift and a few small ones. But than again yucca recurvifolia and filimantosa don't seem to mind the snow at all? 😐
My overall feeling is that desert yuccas perform better if high and dry. 🙂

If I hadn't seen it in your pic, Aaron, I wouldn't have believed that "nice" yuccas (as I call them...versus my y.filamentosa 😆 ) would suffer under snow.
And to lose a large Joshua in a snowdrift!!!
Cold was always the limiting factor.
We always asked "what's your min temp?"
And if someone said "-30C" for at least two weeks every winter, we said "oops, y.rostrata will not make it...unless it's covered in five feet of snow".
The book needs a rewrite. Let us know how they progress, Aaron.
Aaron and Tim each need a big dog sitting out there waiting for the wabbits at night.
Or an audio recording of a coyote howling (quietly?).
Or sprinkle the ground with mountain lion pee...available at your local camping store :sign7:

I will keep us all posted the yuccas progress. 😉
Here is a pic of my yote, he has caught a few even though he is not that big. 😆
Small brown dog (as we call him) the tan lady wont hurt anythings but mice and voles.
As always thanks for the good advice Barb. 😀

Your third one was out chasing wabbits? (I thought you had another little one).

Great photos, everyone. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't put more effort into them vs. palms. 😕
As for rabbits, my three dogs keep them away very effectively. The cats (5? number varies) probably help too.
Goats have been my plague (nine in the freezer now!) but they left my few yuccas alone, as tasty needle palms were available.

Last night you could hear the coyotes howling (yipping) in our yard and marking our dogs go crazy, this morring I go outside and there is rabbit legs on the front porch. Not the first time this has happened. 🙂
Good coyotes as long as they leave my dogs alone. 😀

The bigger one (tan) although not very big is a cross between a cattle dog and a lab. Little brown dog is a chihuahua and dautson. And finaly the little one is a chihuahua.
And I love them.

Now that I have got my dwarf j-tree mostly covered, it has warmed up and is showing even more damage. Very early for this kind of damage. This was a very hardy plant and I would say even more hardy than my big j-tree. I have only seen it get very small burn in the past.
I am also thinking the damage could have also came from the protected location of this plant. It was probably still growing good when the time of the cold hit and had no time for slowing down for winter. J-trees and banana yuccas are easy to see the leaves dehydrate/shrivel up for winter protection, as this was not the case.
I still think it will be ok, but will keep a report going. 🙂

Well since it was warm today I checked on everything and all look good for the most part except for a couple dwarf j-trees and some cactus.
I just can't get over how bad my one normaly very hardy j-tree got burned? I think I have only ever seen it one other year with a few burn spots and that was when it was small? I planted grass by it and so it got more water than normaly in fall, that was probably some to do with it. I'm not sure if it will make it. 😯
The big j-tree
Not bad, Ive seen it worse 😀

Oh man, Aaron, hope the rest of winter is mild to give this guy a chance.
You said you planted some grass near it...was any weed killer ("weed 'n feed") used?

No, I don't use much of that kind of stuff. 😉
Just a bad year for that yucca and the other one near it. Probably the most protected place in my yard and could of been it's down fall. Even if it does not make it, it will come back from the roots. 😀

My very hardy agave not burn yet. 😀
y. elata, burn, but looking good.
Y. torry, looks good, but I think some burn will show in the spring. First year uncovered. 😀
Double headed rostrata, looks fine.
And I will end with a welcome 😀
