Finaly got to see the sun, and some things are showing signs of cold burn.
The rabbits may have done more damage then the cold. 😡
Hybrid agave, covered by a towel. No signs of burn yet.
y. recurvifolia, burn and rabbit food
y. torry, burn (hard to see yellowing) and rabbit food
rostrata, burn light, and rabbit food

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Now that the weather is warming I'm starting to see signs of burn on my dwarf j-tree. Wich is strange becuase it almost never gets burned, even the older leaves are showing burn. Just have to wait until spring gets here to see what happens. 😐

Wow, Aaron the rabbits have almost totally destroyed the recurvi... 😯
Are coyotes simply forcing rabbits closer to residences?
Or are there a heck of a lot more rabbits now, i.e. fewer coyotes? 😕
You had no severe J-tree damage last year so why this year? Oh man!
I think it's time for blankets and cardboard boxes over your stuff, Aaron.
Too valuable to lose to either cold or rabbits.

There has always been lots of rabbits, but after the fire a few years back there is still nothing for them to eat in the winter and even in the summer. They can kill some things, but most things come back. 😉 I ran out of things to cover plants from rabbits. 😆
That cold weather when plants were still growing is what did it. Just to much to go from 50F/10C to -13F/-25C in a weeks time. 😡
I don't wont to cover things that have not been covered from the beginning. I dont wont them to warm up to much and get cold again. Also I think it is good to leave them out in the dry air so they dont get fungus. Dont want any dead tissue rotting. But if it gets -0f again I will try and cover them up for a night or so. 😉

rabbits are a pain in the butt! Those critters are my biggest problem too. They are like lawn mowers! Keep us posted on damage.

But now that leaves have been chewed, those open cuts don't have their normal "waxy" covering.
Good if you can give them some help.
10C to -25C in one week.
That's brutal indeed.
Maybe next summer somebody will scatter wheat seed in the valley... 😉

Will do. 😉
I think everything is going to be ok, they have grown alot sence last winter. Some stuff is to tall for them to eat unless the snow piles up. 😀

Thanks for the pics Aaron! Always love to see your plants. Too bad about the weather/pests. I'm sure your summer heat will bring everything back to where it was in no time!
Wascley Wabbits! 😕
I'm sure your J-Tree will pull through, like you said.
Thanks!

That is a good point, and I will watch them for a while and see how they do. It has been warm here over 0C day and night for more than a week. That is why signs of damage are showing up. But even with the bad burn on the dwarf j-tree I think it will still push out leaves if it don't heal its self all together.
The last extreme cold spell I did try to cover some things but the wind here blew things off or was like a sail and moved the plant around to much for good. Because my job calls me away on cold weather and snow I was unable to fix the problem. I hope for better luck next time.
PS When my plants do seed, there will be very hardy plants to share with us on the forum. I like to weed out the weak and find the truly hardy plants. And this will be a good test for the larger plants that I have, and I belive they will live. 😉

I am starting to notice a trend with my yuccas. The ones kept out of the heavy snow (drier but out in the very cold) look much better than the ones that were under snow cover 😯
Pics
elata on hill wind blown no snow, but exposed to -13.6F/-25C
Very little burn
J-tree on hill same, no burn at all
j-tree mostly dry becuase of size, burn on crown, but not bad yet. exposed
elata mostly if not completely under snow at time of -13.6F/-25C, lots of burn
j-tree completely under snow at time of cold, lots of burn
j-tree mostly under snow and lots of burn

Aaron, I wonder if there's a way of "sealing" those chewed ends on a warm day.
I suppose hot candle wax wouldn't be a good idea
😆 😆
And...don't forget my big yucca rostrata died last winter outdoors with no heat...so better follow your own gut-feeling. 😐

that's strange how your Yuccas in snow look so bad compared to the ones not in snow. Yucca gloriosa seems to get white leaves when in contact with snow but the other species don't seem that bad. Keep us posted.
Here's my rabbit damage I found a few weeks ago.
