It's been a very mild winter.....one of the warmest on record. Lowest temperature was +5F (-15C). We have had 17.8 inches (45 cm) of snow. Here's an update on the Yuccas:

WOW 😯 Tim I keep forgetting how many you have in your collection of Yuccas. How much protection did you use for your variegated Y. gloriosa? I have a few of these and want to plant a couple this spring. Thanks for the pics! 8)

Great shots, Tim! Overall, everything looks to be in pretty good condition. Some of my favourites are the P. trifoliata, the MP tree, the Aucuba, and Y. recurvifolia / Y. rostrata.

Incredible that some are showing signs of growth already.
There's either a big worm doing a backflip or you've lost a skinny cactus.
And look at that Araucaria!!! 😯
It sure didn't look that good this time last year
With all the rain you've had, sun would work miracles.
It'll be wonderful when all the wrapped stuff is freed and cords are put away.
Love all the pics. Thanks for the tour, Tim.

Hi John,
the Y. gloriosa 'variegated' is reasonably hardy here. It died to the ground once. Other than that....the only problem is the fungus on the leaves. That is one of the worst Yuccas in our area for that. The brown spots are worst in winter.....summer is not a problem.........looks like crap this time of year.
Here's the Y. glorisoa 'variegata' after the 08-09 winter.....died to the ground.

Another shot in July showing the dead trunk and new suckers:

Another shot in March showing the variegata in snow:

Of course Y. gloriosa 'variegata' looks best in full glory:

Monkey puzzle didn't do well that winter either:

Hi Cameron,
The only Yucca I lost is Y. queretaroensis. It was mislabeled as a hybrid from Benny as Y. gloriosa x elata.....too bad. I still have other Y. queretaroensis...........I guess I can't plant them outside!!!
Hi Barb,
I see growth on the Illicium's and the tulips in the front yard. I may take off protection this coming weekend as long as the forecast looks good. The biggest surprise was seeing the snapdragons were still in good condition along the house????? Incredible winter. 🙂

Tim
Some nice Yuccas there. The eighth last yucca, the one after the recurvifolia... What would that be? One of the filatas?
I really like the look of it.

Wow! Best hardy yucca collection in North America 😯 ! Most look like they haven't even had any winter (except maybe, what I believe is, y. baccata )
Thanks Tim!

woow!! is that carnerosana,or faxoniana? in few first pics? great garden!!!!!!! my garden wants to be just like yours when it grows up!! 😉
gloriosa variegata showed some leaf damage but it will survive. here is visible that variegata forms are less hardy than regular ones. i like more green ones. please can u tell what species survived this winter? you say mild winter and lowest -15?? that is the regular winter here at my place, and not common this one we had this year of lowest -25C! rgds
Hi Adam,
the 8th to the last is a Yucca constricta...........I agree.......totally awesome Yucca.
A few more shots of Yucca constricta growing up:
<img src= >
Regarding that Yucca baccata damage.......here's the photo I think your talking about. This is a Yucca confinis. I don't think the cold caused the damage....I think it's the combination of cold/moisture and fungus. This Y. confinis is 10 years old and never gets larger.
Hi Damir,
this is the Yucca carnerosana. I do protect it with a container during cold spells and/or snowy periods. It does OK, especially since they are so small still. I should get a larger specimen.........they are beauties.
We are close to the Ocean so we don't experience large swings in temperature extremes. We typically get a low of -19C (-2F) every winter plus or minus 5F or so. Our biggest problem is 4 inches (10cm) of precipitation every month of the year. Cold + wet = death to many marginal plants.
We can grow most Yuccas in my climate except for these (not hardy).
Yucca aloifolia
Yucca desmettiana
Yucca treculeana
Yucca torreyi
Yucca schidigera
Yucca brevifolia
Yucca arizonica
Yucca faxoniana (I have not tried a large one yet)
Yucca filifera
Yucca harrimaniae/angustissima do very poorly here.......the cold doesn't kill them but they don't like our climate and slowly die
Yucca schottii (can grow for several years but will die in colder/wetter winters)
The hardiest southwest trunked Yucca in my climate is Yucca elata for sure, then followed by Yucca rostrata/thompsoniana
<a href="http://www.wunderground.com/US/MA/Seekonk.html?bannertypeclick=bigwx"><img src="http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/weathersticker/bigwx_both_cond/language/www/US/MA/Seekonk.gif" alt="Click for Seekonk, Massachusetts Forecast" border="0" height="60" width="468" />
Oh, Tim! So many different Yucca s are growing there! I feel jealous but it makes me move forward with my yucca's collection. By the way your seeds (last year present) are germinating pretty good. One more reason to be jealous - you are able seeing your plants! I'm not - too much snow...

That's the one time. Awesome I already have a two year old planted constricta

Great collection Tim!
How do you thing "big mama" would do here?
I don't know if I could protect something that massive!
BTW
The seeds............
They started sprouting a few days after I got them and one ("big mama") is about 1-2" tall now.

My Big Mama seeds started to open right away too...then stopped.
Nada.
Maybe too warm in basement 👿

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
-Aaron-
Hi Igor,
we need to send you some of our heat to melt your snow. :hello2:
Hi Adam,
keep us posted on your Y. constricta. There are many forms of Y. constricta too. I want them all!
Jim,
If Yucca filamentosa and Yucca elata can grow in your climate, then you'll be OK. Have you ever tried Y. elata? My gut tells me your extreme cold blasts would kill it but I'm just guessing. Y. elata can take some real cold out west. PS, in a couple years your palm protection will be bigger than 'big mama'.
Jim & Barb,
I'm glad to hear your 'big mama' seeds are growing. I'll start mine about May 1 since I don't have sufficient light to keep them healthy until May when they can go outside. Barb.....how much light do you have in the basement........Yuccas LOVE light.....the more the better.....this is why I start them May 1.
Hi Aaron,
thanks!
