Here are some early pictures of the flower stalk my y. thompsoniana is producing. For those that don't know, I planted this yucca about 15 months ago here in MN in a corner of my trachy bed. It came from a seller in Vegas who stated it was taken from the wild. Vegas? I thought this species grows wild in west Texas... Anyway It came bare root with barely any roots to speak of. I'm amazed it has recovered and grown so much so far since being planted. This yucca exhibits Rostrata traits also so I wonder if it is a cross? It has been exposed to heavy snow several times and mid teens (f) at the lowest last winter. It did get protected along with my trachies though. It's over 5 feet tall now and growing visibly each day. The flower stalk has moved over 6" in the last few days. I can't wait to see the full bloom! I'm getting so sick of combing the helicopters (maple) out of it's head though. The spring green-up came a couple weeks late this year so the big maples are still dropping seed all over my yard. Almost done though, then I can finally do a final cleanup and open/uncover the pool. I won't even consider uncovering the pool until the maples are done, it can be a real mess otherwise. Kind of a bummer though, we are missing out on all this nice weather without the pool open. All these 80s and 90s temps, everything is so happy and growing like mad.<img srcsrcsrc

Jim- That's awesome! Sprouting already! I figured I'd hold off on starting mine until I'm back from another upcoming trip. I have only a few days between trips here so I figured I'd wait until things settle down again. Back from our annual MN deer hunting trip, then I have some business to take care of in Florida. It's looking like the time to cover my trachies will be the weekend of 11/19-20. It's either today or tomorrow, or I wait until then. Long-range forecast looks just fine so I'll wait.

Did you guys just get some snow down there? We were supposed to see our first slushy inch or two but they said it decided to track south into Iowa at the last minute. Still no hard freeze here. Tomato plants are finally toast but some of the pepper plants are still green as can be. Cannas wilted out the other day. Time to cut them down and mulch and cover with a rose cone.

I sprout all my seeds in a baggie of slightly moist perlite or sphagnum moss or both.

This way they are on cruise control and it doesn't matter what I am doing 😆

No snow here,I did see some flurries and I think western Iowa got some snow.

Jim- I germinate my seeds the same way (sphagnum). I put them up in the ceiling at my office on top of a flourescent light fixture. I put a piece of cardboard down and place the ziplocks on it. Maintains a constant mid 90s temp up there 24/7. Works like a charm! My Xmas palm seeds from Cape Coral, FL germinated within a week that way this past spring. They are over a foot and a half tall now... And the ones from PV, MX from last year are starting to actually look like trees now.

Please do keep me/Palms North posted on your seedlings progress. I'll soon germinate my own and keep everyone here posted as well. I hope the others I sent seeds to will do the same.

Paul- Glad to hear yours are sprouting also! I also heard from Scott in Omaha that his are sprouting too. I still have not had the chance to get mine going. Been so busy and out of town too much lately. I plan to get them going this week for sure though. It will be very interesting to see how fast-growing this new cross is. Thompsoniana is much faster growing than I expected, though I wouldn't say it is fast in general compared to other plants. Coupled with filamentosa which in my experience grows at a pretty decent rate too, no experience with elata, I can't wait to see these in a few years...

I forgot that it was still OUTSIDE...
with -7C 19F last night !!!!
