Here are a few pics of Yucca schottii. Planted nonstratified soaked seeds in early November 2011.

Pic on February 25, 2012.. looks like it is practically growing straight up... early trunker??

Aggressive grower! They are not all like this, but these are the two strongest of the batch.

Tim, what temperature killed your schottii?

Hi Adam

It's difficult to ID your seedlings. They really don't look like Y. schottii with 'droopy' leaves but perhaps they are 'leggy' from starting them in winter with not much sun. I'll take a photo of the 2 schottii seedlings I have for comparison.

I'll check the weather data that year.........I don't recall any abnormal low temps that year......probably due to a combination of excess precipitation and cold. I do recall some trunk rot in the summer and remembering NEVER to pull the dead leaves off the trunk.........use cutters or even better don't take the leaves off. I don't touch my elata or rostrata leaves at all...........let them be.

Also, Y schottii juvenile plants are not hardy until the 4 th year when trunk diameter is at least 3/4 inch.

I remember having another photo of my schottii being 100% fried after the 07-08 winter........let me try to find that photo.

PS, if dry Y schottii is likely a z5b plant I believe I see Y schottii in the photos people post at the Denver Botanical Gardens.......it's more like a z6b/7a plant on the east coast (longterm).

Hi Adam,

here's Y. schottii damage the prior winter too. Keep them dry in winter and they may do OK in your area?? One easy way to ID Y. schottii is that the leaf surface is the SMOOTHEST of all the Yuccas (the Y. baccata v thornberi aka Y. arizonica is also very smooth).

Here are some photos of the 2 Y. schottii seedlings I have.

Hi Adam.........if you have Y. schottii seed, scan it in or take photo. It should be thick, not thin like Y. filamentosa.

Hi Igor,

your Yucca seedlings look OK. Sometimes the root from the seed will push up the seed and you'll see a portion of the root above the soil level. That's what's happening with some of yours. I'd repot them up individually soon or all the roots will be tangled up.

Here's the temp data from a local station. December we had over 7 inches (18 cm) of precipitation......things were moist around here going into winter. I think we are a couple degrees warmer than this station. Low was -7F so we hit -5F likely.

Thanks Tim, should I remove a tip of the root while transplanting?

Hi Igor,

I usually break up the soil but try not to disturb the roots. Try not to break the roots. Yuccas love sun.....that's the #1 thing I recommend.

Right now all the yuccaagave seedlings are under good growing bulbs light. So i do not worry about that yet.

In a few years they could look like this. 😀

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Good info/pics Tim.
What a dilemma re hardiness begins in 4th year, yet we're supposed to put Yuccas in the ground ASAP.

That temp chart shows -7F for only a couple of days with a quick bounceback.
Probably proves that duration of cold (for the rest of us) is the biggest culprit with mortality.

Igor's y.baccata label...those wideleaves look more like tulips. Weird 😆

Aaron, nice pic.
Guessing that's at least 50-60 years old.
Wish I'd started when I was 20... 😥

Found a 2008 pic of seedling Y.rostrata.
3 years later, only 1 survives (indoors on a south window).
It's grown 2 inches in 3 years. 😕
