Yucca glauca v stricta is about to bloom. This is it's first bloom and it's already over 6 feet tall......seed grown from 2001.

Here's the entire Yucca........a little 'beat up' from winter snows.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Grats tim!

Seeing how bad your winter was (was it the worse in a good decade or so?) it looks pretty good. You gonna cross pollinate?

Jesse,

I think the 08-09 winter was worse for the Yuccas in my garden.....lots of death/damage that winter. I would say last winter was slightly below normal.

Aaron,

I had another Y. glauca v stricta bloom in 2011. It was seed grown from seed collected by Robert Pitman of Idaho when he was traveling through NE and KS. I think this was the 'Maxwell, NE' form........it does not grow erect trunks like the 'Jetmore, KS' form.

Tim,

Methinks that my seed grown Yucca elata are actually Y. glauca var. stricta. I'll post updated pics soon, but the similarities to your stricta are apparent.

any update Paul? Strictas typically have a weird looking bloom which looks likes a cross between glauca and elata.

Here are some pics from my place.
2 Standard Yucca glauca (Canadian Tire end of season specials, $5 a piece!)

Close up of a flower:

And the former Yucca elata, which I'm now calling Yucca glauca var. stricta... Much more massive than 'regular' glauca in all its parts. I'll have to get myself a real Yucca elata now, I think I still have some seed (that I collected myself!). Grrrrrr.

Anyone else have issues with companies selling mislabeled seeds?

Great work, Tim!

Paul, those Yuccas were a fantastic deal! Y. glauca is one of the few Yucca species that I have right now.

Hi Paul,

thanks for the great photos! That short blooming Y. glauca is really cool.............I've never seen a glauca with such a short bloom........perhaps it's got some western glauca genes in it.
