Hi Aaron a belated thanks for showing your beautiful J trees ... Yucca Brevifolia. Sorry to hear you had problems with damage on some of your plants. Presumably the temperature issue does not happen in their own natural habitat? Just thought I'd let you know that on this side of the Atlantic that Specialist French Nursery L'Ombre des Figuiers has upped the ante a bit with this Yucca

Still too wet for me so lots of sighs 😆

On the northern edge where this plant is found they can see these types of warm/cold spells, and some will receive slight damage or stunted grouth for the year. It is however a rare sight for most of their range, I have once personally seen those kind of extremes in southern California in the desert one very cold snap, 50F in the day and somewhere near or below 0F at night. It is a bit worse here because after they had to endure such temps swings then they also have to live through the extreme cold of the winter. Strange that they normally do well with cold winters, but they hate fall extreme cold snaps. This year they should be fine, it has gradually gotten colder and they have adapted.

Nice J-trees, too bad they don't like wet weather. it is funny how they always charge more for small j-trees than other yuccas. They are for the most part easier and faster to grow from seed. 😀

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Hi Aron,

they still look great. Hope for dry and average winter. As I understand from your previous posts warm winters is not always welcome. I have also problems with relative warm but in difference with you whet winter 2014/2015.

Here is one of survivors

Best regards,

Mario

At -21C everything would be dead in my Garden 😯 Is that the norm for Idaho temps in early December?

No, not normally that cold, that early. It did get that cold back in 2010 or 2011, and was -12F (officially) in late November. Killed a few plants and froze the top off the Y. brevifolia in the pic. I don't think I will see as much damage this year because it was better acclimated this year, of course I say this now, what until spring. lol

Aaron what is the largest J-tree you have, its age, height and width (diameter) at its widest point?

Just making sure I accounted for enough spread where I planted mine. I believe from center of plant to edge of driveway I have about 5 feet...
