Do you know of a way to tell a Brevifolia vs. a Brevifolia var. Jaegeriana (plant or seed) without waiting 30 years?
Seems I have to fully trust seed dealers that they know the difference or where they sources their seeds from...
There is up to 5 different J-trees out there. I can only tell the two apart. Brevifolia brevifolia is what is found at Joshua tree monument. They are huge, leaves are much longer, and the grow a taller trunk before they branch out, they are much larger than the others. Brevifolia var jaegeriana are much smaller bushier, leaves much smaller, you can really see the difference next to each other after they start growing a trunk, in about 5 years. 😀

Thanks John. I don't think it will be long before yours gets that big, if I remember right your j-tree was growing fast! 😀

I noticed this spring after the temps warmed up over the 60 f, my j-trees started to show major winter damage on the spears. Almost every spear on every one of the them has damage. I believe they will be just fine, but strange to have so much damage after the warmest winter I have seen in my garden and the driest.
I also uncovered a small cactus and it looked great, the weather has been warm but now the cactus looks just about dead. My friend in Kansas was having a similar problem there and a very warm winter. The only thing I can think of was the early major freeze in Nov. Was very similar to the year I lost the top to my big j-tree and lost one that was trunking, come to think about it, my friend in Kansas said they had a early cold spell as well. 😐

Not all, but most of the ones showing growth. Most did not grow much this year, recieved damage from the warm/cold extremes last fall.
