Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Looks good! If your going to plant it outside, I would plant it up high. The roots rot easily. 🙂

Glad you spotted the schidigeras, if you look at the pics they were not seen in the higher elevations, to bad because I would like to find a hardy one. 😉
They are a close relative of baccata(or are they Tim?), but they are not very cold hardy. I did notice in that area they are not as tall as they are north of Vegas. 🙂

I don't know much about Y. schidigeras.............I tried a seedling back in 2000 and it died in it's first winter......as far as I know they should be zone 6b hardy out west in dry areas and less hardy in higher moisture areas. Has your friend south of you tried Y. schidigera? They sure look like a trunking baccata but don't have baccata's cold tolerance. There is another form of schidigera down in the San Diego, CA area..........I would like to try one of those too. Y. schidigera is another species I need to do a mass planting! 😉

They might grow in a southern 6b. My friend has tried many of times and I have tried many times even bigger plants with nice trunks, and covered ones. I would say they are as hardy as Y. rigida.
I think you have the right idea of a mass planting or a cross with baccata might work. You would think finding a cross in the wild would be easy because the two grow along side each other. 😆

Aaron,

check this out. Temps for Dec. 1990 in Nevada. This is why Y. brevifolia is hardy. What is the coldest temp where they grow.......I'm not familiar with all the town names.

WOW...some of those places got colder than I thought they would.

I know some of the weather stations within thier range had readings of -18/-20F That's cold! But does not surprise me. I seen one growing in Pocatello Idaho for years that survived winters of -20f or colder. I thought it was fake for years until it keep getting bigger. It was in a raised rail-road-tie bed about 2/3 feet high. If you can keep the roots out of the wet I think they do well. 😀
