i am very glad to report that my 3 yucca aloifolia survived -25 C. till now there is no any damage. -25 C was lowest temp this winter, few weeks ago. it surprised me, cause it's said is not much hardy from experience of growers. plants were not protected,left outdoor first year, i wonered will maybe one of this 3 survive. since lots of aloifolias die at temps of -10C and lower. mine were covered with snow, maybe that helped.

Wow, damir, it had to be snow depth that protected them.

That Trachy's bud was unprotected too? 😯

Hi Damir,
great news the Y. aloifolia are still alive. -25C would kill them. Where did you get the seed? I would assume the coldest nights were around when the Y. aloifolias were snow covered. Do your aloifolias have a serrated leaf edge (small teeth along the edge of the leaves)? This trait will confirm the seed was not hybrid. I've seen others grow Y. aloifolia seed only for the seedlings be hybrids with some other hardy Yucca.

i got the seeds from dalmatia, zadar. and yes it was snow cowered when it was -25C. i will look and take pic of leaf edge and post it here. since aloifolia is the only one yucca specie that produce seeds without yucca moth, i dont see any other specie included. and we dont have here yucca moth.

They cypruss looks ok, but that trachy looks a bit angry lol. Maybe PM jim, and see what he has to say about it. Either way it will be a great experiment.
The recent cold in europe has got me thinking, how are those bulgarian trachys holding up through all of this? Anyone know?

I dont think that palm has seen that cold for that long in its life....... IF it makes it it would make his palms more famous!

trachycarpus bulgaria should be the cold hardest trachy. but, not all bulgarias have same cold hardiness. i have 2 seedlings of bulgaria, that will be planted outdoor when it will have small trunk. in few years from now. takil is a good candidate for experimenting. i have some seeds from alexander. we'll see in future how cold hardy it really is. it would be good to make a hybride between this 2 species bulgaria X takil. 8)
i am bit surprised by my aloifolia that survived this winter. i think, till now it looks very well. if it starts to grow in spring it is alive, but still till now didnt show any damage,like rotten spear,spots at leaves....

Igor, thanks for the update on the Bulgarians. If these palms survive, I'll definitely have to get some seeds from Kiril next season!
