I don't about you guys n gals the other side of the Atlantic but most Yucca Rostrata here in Europe are trunks of various sizes with piddly little mop heads attached. Ok so they actually grow when planted out but it is refreshing to find a Rostrata that is different. And boy this one was different... not tall by any means 6ft in its pot but it has presence and a full skirt to the ground

This plant will be planted along with my Dasylirion Longissimum next spring and will over winter in one of my walk in plastic greenhouses.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Oh, Andy, that's a stunner.

Looks almost like the big headed one--but no trunk--that died during my first winter 😥 😥

In your location, I'd build a carport over it so it doesn't get rain. 😆

Where on earth in your chock-full garden will it go????? 😉

What a good idea! That would work good for winters with lots of rain. 😀

I wanted to put it in the bedroom but my wife doesn't like competition 😆

Its a beaut of a Yucca but sadly it has been damaged by the so called professional freight company that delivered it. They thought it would be a good idea to place it horizontally on a pallet unsecured rather than upright and shrink wrapped to the pallet. 🙄 How can they treat such a beautiful plant like that. Ive been onto the supplier to demand why this plant has been sent to me in this condition. In case you missed it...

BTW this Yucca came from Spain, conceived and raised there and not Mexico.

The supplier should change freight companies, and set written standards for future shipments.
The nursery could even demand the freight company provide insurance for damage en route.

Fortunately they didn't ship it upside down, and the growing point is unmarred.

Happy to comply, Aaron, although mine aren't on steroids.

"Canadian" beer 😆 😆 for scale (and if you believe that, I've got a 1969 Mazda for sale, ha ha)

Two of 'em:
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7896830354/" title="001 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="500" height="375" alt="001"></a>

The third in the group:
<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7896847328/" title="002 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="375" height="500" alt="002"></a>

Much bluer than my camera does justice...

Here they are in the bed with the Washy robusta and Washy filibusta (it's at far end).

<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7896834078/" title="006 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="375" height="500" alt="006"></a>

I really like the spiral manner in which the new growth emerges...very cool from the top

<a href=" http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7896840792/" title="004 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src=" " width="500" height="375" alt="004"></a>

Sorry to derail your thread, Andy...back to you!

Those are looking so very nice! I wish mine grew that fast! I think I need one of like'em. I tried one after seeing yours a couple of years ago, but it did not make it through the winter. I should have keep it inside longer. 😀

Aaron, winters are challenging when heat isn't available.
Bought these before I learned from you guys that Y.rostrata will NEVER make it here unprotected.
I should've bought y.elata and/or y.thompsoniana (hybridized?) for any hope of unheated success.
Even my rough-looking old y.filamentosas suffer with leaf damage when there's little snow...(oops, sorry to use the "s" word in August).

And from what some here have said, yuccas don't do well in pots for very long either 😐 😐 .
Darn!

then you're in trouble

Yup, Andy, that'll be a challenge.

The one I tried came from a green-house grown stock. So that may have been my problem, and I should have grown it inside that first winter. But all the other I have here I have grown from seed and I have never given them heat, and many I only cover the first year (except last year I coved most everything).
Some are very hardy as long as the roots and the crown stay dry.

Barb, I hope to find seed in the blue form as you, I forget the selection/name?

Andym, do you know the selection/form of rostrata you have? I think the silver leaves are amazing.

Aaron, I recall worrying myself sick about your y.brevifolia, and others that you had unprotected during winters.
And cheering when the big one recovered with two heads.
It was heart-wrenching hearing/seeing losses.

But I just can't bring myself to risk an unprotected/barely protected winter for my rostratas...yet that would certainly make them hardier if they survived.
I wouldn't be able to sleep at night 😆 😆

Mine are called Y.rostrata "sapphire skies" (Plant Delights nursery in the Carolinas).

You'll probably recall our "climate change" conversation years ago * grin * where I admitted y.rostrata wasn't hardy here.
But we were all waiting for warmer winters soon.
Instead we got hotter summers 😆 😆

Here's the Yucca page from their catalogue: http://www.plantdelights.com/Y/products/817/

Aaron... I'm afraid I don't but I'm actually wondering now whether it is a hybrid. I just don't have enough experience to tell. I am still in contact with the supplier so I will enquire.
But with leaves that wide it looks that way.

Barb, I would not risk your rostrata to the cold sense you have power close by, I just want people to know that in the right planting conditions, rostrata my live in thier area, and is worth the risk if they can get the plants cheap enough. 😀

Thanks for the name "sapphire skies" that it. 😉
