Hi everyone!It's been awhile that I haven't posted here so I like to share pics of the progress my yuccas (grown from seed) have made and also new additions mainly "hybrids"This is my rock garden where I've planted many of my yuccas, the difference from 2014 is that pure rostratas are missing, all died :(I had protected 3 from rain/snow but the winter was just too cold, so many nights at -30 c + were surely fatal, I still have 2 in pots and 1 that is planted near the foundation of the house and will be protected with frost cloth & styrofoam, we'll see if it makes it, fingers crossed for a mild winter.Rock garden August 29, 2015this is what it looked like at winter's end, all rostratas and baccatas ,cacti & some sempervivums dead except the glaucas which survived easily.Rock garden spring 2015What I learned from this experience is that glaucas are bulletproof, lowest temp here was -36c & I think it can surely withstand -40cbiggest surprise was the baccatas: those left unprotected survived easily intact! but those that were protected from rain & snow perished wth?! :shock:yucca baccata grown from seed survived intact (pic taken april 13, 2015)same baccata august 29 (22 months old)this is my best yucca glauca grown from seed (pic taken April 29, 2015) - 16 months oldand the same glauca this past Aug 29, amazing growth!I have 2 yuccas "color guard" and my original filamentosa, the only ones that are not grown from seedyucca glauca #2 - Aug 29 (19 months old)yucca glauca #3 (with 2 offshoots at each side which makes it look bigger) - Aug 29 (19 months old)and now I would like to share pics of my hybrids which some have shown incredible growth in just a short amount of timeyucca (Filamentosa x Glauca) X Elata #1 (9 months old)before and after picsYucca Elata X Filamentosa #1 (1 year old)Before & after pics June 29- Sept 9and here is a comparison with my best yucca glauca and my filamentosa color guardyucca Elata X Filamentosa #2 (1 year old)yucca Elata X Filamentosa #3 (this one has a bit thick stem)- 1 year oldyucca Flaccida (Poconos Mts, PA)x Filata X Filamentosa x Rostrata #1 (Tim's hybrid-thanks!)- 6 months oldyucca Flaccida (Poconos Mts, PA)x Filata X Filamentosa x Rostrata #2 (Tim's hybrid-thanks!)- 6 months oldyucca Gloriosa Tenn. I just feel lucky to be able to grow other varieties besides filamentosa & glauca, I think hybrids are the way to go if you have cold/very cold winters 😉

I might suggest that they are the ONLY way to go! I'm still waiting for someone to make some Yucca brevifolia hybrids. I was able to overwinter a brevifolia for about 3 years in my garden (moisture protection, absolute minimum low was -32C), but they won't take the cold/wet long term.

P.S. I will get around to posting some pictures of my plants again at some point!

Totally agree with you, as for yucca brevifolia hybrids, I think I read in Benny Jensen website that the only two species where there's no record of hybrids are yucca brevifolia and y. Whipplei, must be real difficult to hybridize those two!

Thank you. Yucca baccata is one of my favorites yuccas, I hope the one you see in the pics survives for many, many years and gets to bloom so I can try cross pollination, I would love to have a baccata hybrid! :thumbup:
