My yuccas 2015 (lots of pics!)

Hi everyone!
It's been awhile that I haven't posted here so I like to share pics of the progress my yuccas (grown from seed) have made and also new additions mainly "hybrids"

This is my rock garden where I've planted many of my yuccas, the difference from 2014 is that pure rostratas are missing, all died 🙁 I had protected 3 from rain/snow but the winter was just too cold, so many nights at -30 c + were surely fatal, I still have 2 in pots and 1 that is planted near the foundation of the house and will be protected with frost cloth & styrofoam, we'll see if it makes it, fingers crossed for a mild winter.

this is what it looked like at winter's end, all rostratas and baccatas ,cacti & some sempervivums dead except the glaucas which survived easily.

What I learned from this experience is that glaucas are bulletproof, lowest temp here was -36c & I think it can surely withstand -40c
biggest surprise was the baccatas: those left unprotected survived easily intact! but those that were protected from rain & snow perished wth?! 😯

I have 2 yuccas "color guard" and my original filamentosa, the only ones that are not grown from seed

yucca Filamentosa X Rostrata #2 (Tim's hybrid-thanks!)- 5 months old, hasn't grown much - all the seeds from this hybrid germinated easily but I lost most of it because of a lack of chlorophyl in the seedlings, only 4 survived and 2 look weak/fragile.....time will tell and also the winter test!

Nice collection of Yucca...
that Colorguard sure is a pretty
Yucca when it can be fully seen.
Do you use any kind of cover over them?
If looks like with 2 fence sides already in play
that you could put a rain cover at least coming off
that and maybe some sides later for winter.

Cool stuff! Hope to see some of those hybrids make it through the winter! You're in a similar (but slightly warmer?) zone than I am, I'm in a solid 4b near Kingston, ON.

I'll see if I can't grab some pics of mine in a few weeks for comparison.

Thanks Jim! I really like my yuccas color guard, both really stand out in the garden
I usually don't protect my yuccas except this past winter when I made a shelter to protect my young yuccas grown from seed but it didn't help much. I think a frost cloth with 3-4 feet of snow could be the best protection for my situation......I will tell you next spring 😀

If I believe the current predictions for this coming winter, it should be mild but with lots of snow which I don't mind, snow is the best blanket for most of the plants, who would have thought that my 2 baccatas barely 1 year old would survive -36 C with only a 4 feet wet blanket of snow?
similar zone yes, if I look at the map I'm a bit more north also I'm located at the northern limits with neighbor city St-Lin which is classified as 4b
It would be really cool if you could share pics of your hybrids, I've seen some of your yuccas especially your glaucas which look great and you have plenty of space to grow lots more yuccas 8)

Hi Edwin.... those Yuccas really look good and the pictures have an amazing clarity to them. No favourites there, I'd have them all in my garden. Lets hope the Winter is kinder for you.

Thank you for your nice comments, I'm really happy about the growth of my yuccas until now, I try to take my pics early in the morning or late in the afternoon, it gives me nice pics most of the time....fingers crossed for a mild winter 😀

I'm surprised that my 2 baccatas handle the rain very well, must be my very fine sandy soil and the river stones all around makes for an excellent drainage!

I agree, that and building a mound for your yuccas helps. Drainage, drainage, drainage, and location, location, location. Everyone wants a house on the hill, so do desert plants. lol

Thought that my location receives much rainfall but yours is high indeed! And these winter temperatures. Guess my winters are not so bad 😉

I just feel lucky to be able to grow other varieties besides filamentosa & glauca, I think hybrids are the way to go if you have cold/very cold winters 😉
