I took a trip down to the Washington DC area to visit family. My brother lives in Fairfax, VA which is just outside Wash DC. Here's the largest Yucca rostrata I've seen so far north. It bloomed in July 2008. Has any other Y. rostrata bloomed so far north on east coast? I know some rostratas bloom after being transplated but this one bloomed all by itself.

I really jumped when I read "up north"...but I guess Washington is 😆
Is that a type of cedar leaning into it?
The evergreen canopy probably provides some shelter if/when a brutal winter comes along?
Lovely flowers...so blue compared to the tree.
Guessing 25 years old?

Barb, a cedar looks like Thuja plicata, doesn't it?

Hi All,
not too sure how long it's been planted there.....I can ask my brother when he first spotted it.
The evergreen is now gone (removed this year).....it was a Cryptomeria japonica.
This is the furthest north a Y. rostrata has bloomed by itself. I've seen others bloom further north but typically due to transplant shock.

Holy hell thats big LOL. And what a place for it to be.... not the zoo, or university or botanical gardens, but an adoption agency...... Sure there hardy to what, zone 4? But would they even get close to that big? Wouldnt the amount of rain they get there rot it??

Yucca rostrata is marginal in my climate (USDA z6b) since we receive lots of winter precipitation (about 4 inches per month) (10cm). Out west in dryer conditions Y. rostrata seem to be OK to zone 5ish. The adoption agency was for pets.......we can only figure an employee planted it many years ago.
